Q1- SELECT ONE TOPIC FROM CHAPTER 13 AND EXPLAIN YOUR SELECTION The Juvenile Justice System The Juvenile Justice System is responsible for individuals who are under 18 years old for violations of the law. When minors or juveniles are found guilty of committing crimes, they are referred to as “delinquents” or “juvenile delinquents”. The term "delinquent" is used to describe a young person who has violated the law, while "juvenile delinquent" refers to a minor who has committed a criminal offense. The Juvenile Justice System is different from the adult system, the goal of the juvenile Justice System is rehabilitation rather than punishment. There are a few differences between the criminal and juvenile justice systems, Adults get arrested but juveniles receive police contacts. “juvenile detention is comparable to adult jail and juvenile commitment is comparable to adult prison. Juveniles are categorically exempt from capital punishment.” “American Corrections: Theory, Research, Policy, and Practice”, Matt DeLisi and Peter J. Conis”. A distinction between the Juvenile Justice System and the justice system is the widespread use of diversion. Diversion approaches to hold the youths accountable but, letting them off with a “warning or discussion with the youth and his or her parents.” The Juvenile Justice System also relies on probation, 50 percent of the cases are resolved through probation, which is similar to deferred sentences in the adult justice system. When a young person is prosecuted in criminal court, it's referred to as either transfer or waiver. There are five types of waivers, judicial waiver, legislative waiver, prosecutorial waiver, demand waiver and reverse waiver. Q2- Discuss women in the correctional system? as per your reading In the correctional system, women are often treated poorly. The rate of increase among women in most correctional populations is higher than men. “The rate of growth in probation, jail, prison, and parole is also much higher among women. Between 1990 and 2000, the female probation population grew 76 percent, the female jail population grew 89 percent, the female prison population increased 106 percent, and the female parole population surged 105 percent.”(“American Corrections: Theory, Research, Policy, and Practice” Matt DeLisi and Peter J. Conis.).Women in the correctional system face complex challenges such as rape, sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and limited access to jobs and educational programs. With limited access to healthcare facilities, women suffer from health problems. Women are also separated from their children and family, which can lead to mental health issues. Women and men should be treated equally, according to the Fourteenth Amendment. The Fourteenth Amendment guarantees equal protection and due process, ensuring women receive the same procedural steps as men. However, women are forced to be in the same facilities as men, and this usually leads to rape and prostitution. More treatments and facilities should be created to help both men and women in
corrections. It is essential for both genders to successfully reintegrate back into society and live their lives adequately.
