SOC 324 Crime and Violence Issue Worksheet 1. Choose a topic. What is your chosen crime or violence issue? Choose from the following list and provide a brief preliminary overview. Your overview will simply be 1–2 sentences describing why this issue is important to you and to society in general. Decriminalization of responsible drug use Intervention on the issue of campus rape Prisons as mental health institutions Militarization of police Institutionalized racism in a chosen area of the criminal justice system Other issue (if approved by instructor) Intervention on the issue of campus rape This social issue is important to me because while it didn’t happen on a college campus, I have experienced sexual assault and child grooming so this topic in any form is always important to me. Second, especially after living on a college campus for a year and a half I have seen rape culture first-hand and have seen how it affects victims, other students at the school, and the institution. I am a big advocate for prevention so I feel the more awareness that is brought to a topic the more people will be aware, notice the signs, and potentially help if they see someone in an unsafe situation. I feel it’s important to society in general as it is a societal issue that affects everyone of any age, gender, race/ethnicity, or sexual orientation. 2. Introduce your social advocacy group. This is an advocacy group of your own creation. In other words, if you were to establish an advocacy group dedicated to the work of My advocacy group would be public awareness and social action. I’m not sure if it would be considered changing laws, as I know many colleges already require students to take some kind of training/awareness course on sexual assault and dating violence, but my group would require that all
your issue, what does that advocacy group look like and what are its ultimate goals (e.g., public awareness, political action, social action, changing laws)? Explain the work the group does related to the topic area. Explain how the social issue aligns with the group’s ultimate goals. schools nationwide have some kind of training like this. My group would provide education on consent and sexual assault and ensure that students knew the signs to look for as well as how to be an active bystander to help someone in a dangerous situation. 3. Begin research: Provide summaries and citations of some of the sources you are finding related to this topic area. Include two or more sources here. Campus sexual violence: Statistics. RAINN. (n.d.-a). https://www.rainn.org/statistics/campus-sexual-violence Rainn (rape, abuse & incest national network), is the nations largest anti- sexual violence organization. This page specifically focuses on statistics surrounding campus rape/sexual assault. Page talks about how sexual assault on college campuses is more prevelant than any other crime on campuses. Abrams, Z. (2018, May). Sexual harassment on campus . Monitor on Psychology. https://www.apa.org/monitor/2018/05/sexual- harassment This article focuses advice and resources for students on how to prevent campus assault and how faculty responds to misconduct and assault. The article also focuses on how society defines sexual assault and how hard it
is to get accurate numbers since it’s one of the most underreported crimes. The article also focuses on how it’s even harder to get accurate statistics for sexual assault against the LGBTQIA+ community. The article’s overall message is calling for new interventions that would hold the schools accountable and teaching intervention and bystander intervention strategies to staff and students. Gluck, S. (2021, December 17). Effects of Rape: Psychological and Physical Effects of Rape, HealthyPlace. Retrieved on 2023, November 4 from https://www.healthyplace.com/abuse/rape/effects-of-rape- psychological-and-physical-effects-of-rape This article focuses on the aftermath and after effects after one has been raped. The article talk about the physical and psychological effects of rape. I feel focusing on the aftermath and how the victim is affected is very important because it shows why as a society people need to care more about this topic. Many people are affected by rape and sexual assault, but too often it’s viewed as a personal issue, when in reality it is a societal issue. (Bedera & Trenton) Bedera, N., & Trenton , T. M. (n.d.). 4. Preliminary position statement: Explain your position on the social issue as a research assistant for your social advocacy group. Try to refine your position into a clear and succinct position statement that your advocacy group might use on its website or in its materials. This statement is preliminary at this point, and may evolve as you continue your research. The affects of rape and sexual assault are indescribable, and the attackers should be held accountable. Schools should also ensure they are providing a safe environment for students and proper awareness training on sexual assault, rape, and how to be active bystander. Too often, even when victims report their assault to the school, many times they don’t report it. Even though there are several studies showing how common rape is on college campuses, it was found that about 89% of colleges and universities reported zero incidents of rape. ( An underreported problem: Campus sexual misconduct ) Schools and the justice system should hold these offenders accountable. An underreported problem: Campus sexual misconduct . AAUW. (2022, May 12). https://www.aauw.org/resources/article/underreported-sexual- misconduct/ 5. Stereotypes: As you work through the research, you will begin to uncover stereotypes related to your issue. What have you discovered thus far? One stereotype I believe you hear when it comes to rape and sexual assault is that it’s a womans issue when that is not true. While female presenting people find themselves victims more often, male presenting people are also victims. One out of thirty- three American men will experience attempted or completed sexual assault, while one of out six women has been the victim of
an attempted or completed sexual assault or rape. (Victims of sexual violence: Statistics) Victims of sexual violence: Statistics . RAINN. (n.d.-d). https://www.rainn.org/statistics/victims-sexual-violence Another stereotype, which also falls under social roles are that oftentimes the idea that men are sexually adventurous, emotionally restrained, and aggressive and that women are passive, obedient, and sensitive. Male sexual victimization is understudied and unrepresented compared with female sexual victimization. (Depraetere et al. 2020) Depraetere, J., Vandeviver, C., Beken, T. V., & Keygnaert, I. (2020). Big Boys Don’t Cry: A Critical Interpretive Synthesis of Male Sexual Victimization. Trauma, Violence, & Abuse, 21(5), 991–1010. https://doi.org/10.1177/1524838018816979 6. Further exploration: What have you come across that you want to find out more about? This section is for notes to yourself about additional research you plan to pursue. I want to look into more of what schools are doing to hold these people accountable. I also think it would be interesting to look into how schools handle these cases when they’re reported to them. I know I have seen first hand the aftermath of a friend getting raped on a college campus and because the attacker was a baseball player, nothing happened other than him getting suspended but yet my friends whole life was changed and she dropped out of school. Our college did nothing and I want to see how common of a trend that is. I feel it’s too easy for people to dismiss this topic because they are lucky enough to have never experienced this or to know someone who has.
7. Questions: Any questions for the instructor about the project or the topic area. (This area is optional.) Note: In many cases, you will write more than the size of the text box provided above, which is fine—use as much space as you need. If you have to go on to additional pages, the boxes will expand automatically as you write more.
