Stacy Grooms Brandman University Professor Olsen COMU-101-OL2 11/09/2023 Topic : The influence of social media Specific Purpose: To discuss and inform the audience about the growth of social media, including the pros and cons, and also the impact social media has on today’s society. Central Idea: Social media has become one of the biggest platforms used for various reasons, and is used by people of all ages, religion, and backgrounds. It has affected the world in a big way by how much time it consumes from the people that makes up the world’s population. Introduction I. How many of us can relate to being at work, or sitting around the house, or even working really hard on a school project and your mind drifts off to what’s going on in the social media world? “What’d you say? Can you repeat yourself? Huh?” Have these expressions ever been used while you were trying to have a conversation with someone? But they were too busy and distracted with their faces buried in their phones because social media has all of their attention. II. As people, we prioritize social media into our everyday lives, whether it’s to keep up with today’s news by watching Youtube videos, or faithfully logging into outlets such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok to keep up with the lives of others close to you or even distant. Because of how commonly used technology, specifically social media, is in today’s society, it is an important subject to speak about. III. Social media is the most used platform in the world today by people of all age groups, race, religion. It’s safe to say it has affected the way the world functions. IV. I have been conducting a thorough research using articles and credible sources written by credible authors. V. With social media having such a big impact on people’s lives, it is imperative to know the pros and cons of using these sources the news, interactions, and the use of sharing your life, which is what I will be explaining. Is social media the problem? Or are we? Body I. How social media affects Education.
A. Social media can be used successfully for educational purposes and may even improve academic performance. B. Social media provides opportunities for educators that have evolved beyond connecting and communicating on a personal level with other individuals. II. The influence social media has on Adolescent Suicide A. In the past decade, researchers have identified addictive behaviors related to social media use, including poor time management, interpersonal problems, mood modification, and a preference for online versus in- person social interaction. B. A similar review found a greater association between “high” amounts of time spent on social networking websites and suicidal behaviors than moderate amounts of time. C. Many adolescents receiving inpatient treatment for acute suicidal crises reveal shared negative social media related experiences. Many discussed being unable to participate in daily activities, such as sleeping or studying, without becoming distracted by social media platforms. Is social media a good influence on us? Or are we’re blinded by the truth! III. The Global Perspectives on social media A. The negative impact social media has on different populations; the use of social media for job placement; the dangers of social media for the psyche. B. Social media information privacy concern (SMIPC) is defined as concerns about loss of privacy as a result of the disclosure of personal information to known and unknown external agents, including other social media users, social media platforms, and third parties. Conclusion I. Social media has many advantages such as sharing information and even enhancing your academic performance. However, it’s presented some disadvantages as well, including negative effects on mental health or even the disruption in one’s privacy. II. Given both the positive and negative effects of social media, social media has become an integral part of our lives. While it’s importance cannot be understated, it is crucial to be aware of the effects, both positive and negative, associated within its use.
With all being said, were you able to take anything from all of the information provided? Did you think about logging into your instagram while listening to the speech?
