Discrimination and Bias B.S in Elementary Education Dr. Judy Boyd February 6, 2024
Scenario One (Fewer Girls Mentioned) In this scenario, a second-grade girl is curious about why her textbook mentions more boys than girls. This leads the other students to question why there are fewer African Americans and Hispanics mentioned in the textbook as well. This is an opportunity to explain to the students that African Americans and Hispanics did not have equal rights back then and it was not until later in history that these rights were granted. It is essential for educators to recognize the variations in their students' learning styles so that they can incorporate effective teaching methods into their daily lessons, curriculum, and assessments. According to the Guide to Types of Learning Styles (2024), understanding the differences in learning styles will help educators optimize their teaching strategies. When discussing the Civil War era, children can learn about the discrimination that people faced and how men and women fought for their rights. Scenario Two (Bus Issue) A first-grade child comes into the class crying because a classmate on the bus told her that all children from her Middle Eastern country are bad. A racial incident at a place of learning is a serious matter that should not be taken lightly. If not addressed, it can have detrimental consequences, making students feel dismissed when they need support. Dr. Ross advises that even though it can be challenging to discuss race-related issues, it is crucial to document what happened and discuss with the students how to proceed. I would also suggest sitting down with the student who experienced the incident and assuring them that what was said is not true.
Discrimination and Bias I would educate students about diversity through lectures. It is easy for students, especially in primary grades, to become prejudiced because they are easily influenced. Talking about people and their country can hurt their feelings and those who do so are bullying that person. Informing students about different cultures and ways of living can have a great impact because they may not have access to this information at home. Also, knowing about a student's country can help the teacher better understand where they come from. According to Parker & Beck (2022), "teachers who have a better grasp of cultural diversity are better equipped to handle difficult conversations with students". A festival or a multicultural parent night would be a great way to introduce parents to different cultures. Awareness of Bias and Discrimination I believe that education is a powerful tool to combat discrimination. When students are taught about prejudice and discrimination at an early age, it helps them develop a better understanding of past events. Nowadays, students are exposed to various actions of other people and tend to pick them up. Discrimination is both a social and emotional issue that affects students and society in many ways. By focusing on our core values, beliefs, and strengths, we can motivate ourselves to succeed and overcome the negative effects of bias. Overcoming hardships can also make us more resilient and better equipped to face future challenges.
