1 Education Deficit: Does Lack of Education Cause Poverty? Sherika Harris University of Arizona Global Campus GEN499: General Education Capstone Amy Taylor December 18, 2023
2 Education Deficit: Does Lack of Education Cause Poverty? Globally, education is a fundamental human right. Yet, it frequently fails to achieve its stated goals of promoting intercultural tolerance, camaraderie, and understanding, which leads to a broken and dysfunctional society. Millions of people worldwide suffer from poverty, which results in food insecurity, anxiety, and restricted access to education as families fight to feed their families and deal with the threat of famine in the future. Education is a vital component of all civilizations and significantly impacts a country's prosperity. Although poverty has many interconnected causes, there isn't a single solution. Every culture recognizes the importance of education and how it affects a nation's ability to prosper. The main reasons people don't get an education are a lack of school funding and the inability to support low-income neighborhoods. The relationship between a lack of education and poverty is intricate and varied, impacted by social, economic, and personal variables. Although poverty is a result of a lack of education, it is only one of many interrelated reasons that keep people in poverty. This statement admits and suggests the intricacy of the relationship between poverty and a lack of education. It implies that poverty and other issues might not have a straightforward cause-and-effect relationship. But in this instance, poverty is the cause of the lack of education. Globalism and globalization are commonly used interchangeably, with varying connotations depending on the speaker's perspective and context. Both concepts have been debated and controversial, with proponents and opponents offering different interpretations. The word "globalization" refers to the increasing reliance on economies, cultures, and communities due to international trade, economic liberalization, and scientific advancements. Globalism is a collection of concepts and policies that emphasize international cooperation, governance, and a
3 global community in order to address global concerns such as poverty, conflict, and lack of education through coordinated worldwide efforts.     There are various viewpoints on what makes someone a global citizen. Global citizenship has grown significantly, with individuals becoming more interconnected and reliant on one another. As we navigate the complexity of the twenty-first century, it is more crucial than ever for individuals to take on the responsibilities of global citizenship and embrace a global viewpoint. Being a global citizen, which goes beyond national borders, emphasizes belonging to a greater human community. It means recognizing how interconnected everything is and developing a mindset that prioritizes understanding, empathy, and addressing global problems. In this introduction, this paper will discuss the importance of being a global citizen and how it contributes to creating a more peaceful, varied, and sustainable international community.   Individuals might not be able to acquire the knowledge and abilities required to find employment or launch their own businesses without access to education. Economic progress requires an informed public. To be creative, people must always be learning new things and conducting study. Poverty-stricken students might not have access to the resources they require at home to complete their schoolwork, study, or participate in extracurricular activities that support their academic success. UNICEF For Every Child, n.d. (para 1.) states that "of the approximately 333 million people worldwide who live in extreme poverty, half are children, making up one-third of the population that struggles to make ends meet on less than $2.15 a day." Academic achievement is negatively impacted by poverty, but it's important to understand whether these effects can be mitigated or even reversed. Lack of knowledge might make it harder to get employment or launch a business, which can lead to poverty cycles. Global citizens must make sure that top-notch education is available to everybody. 4 richest countries among the 34 Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries, but it is also one of the countries with the highest rates of child poverty," says Sach (2016). The saying tells volumes about the US, which is why it's alarming. According to the OECD, 21% of American children between the ages of 0 and 17 live in poverty households, compared to 14% of children worldwide.  Education may alleviate poverty in several ways, including raising people's productivity and income, improving their nutrition and health, enabling them to engage in social and political decision-making, and promoting social cohesion and peace.  Poverty is a multidimensional challenge that impacts several communities worldwide. According to (Tackei, 2021), “ To reduce poverty in earnest, good education should be part of the solution. Stopping school at 12th grade is not enough; those who do not want to go to college should be encouraged to go to trade school to learn a trade.” This could lead to an increase in education and reduce poverty. Conclusion In conclusion, it is impossible to overestimate the importance of education on a worldwide scale as a basic human right. However, a broken and dysfunctional society has been exacerbated by the pervasive inability of educational systems to properly promote intercultural tolerance, camaraderie, and understanding. Millions of people worldwide live in poverty, which exacerbates this problem by creating food insecurity, anxiety, and little possibilities for education as families fight to satisfy basic necessities and deal with the threat of famine.
