6-1 Discussion: Social Media Use Hello, I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving! Please excuse the long post: Social Media is such a huge thing not just for law enforcement but for criminals as well. Social media has changed so much over the years and some police departments use it to help find offenders or to even stay connected to the public. Just a couple of years ago there was a big wave of departments posting funny dance videos and it truly changed many individual's perspectives on law enforcement. However, with that good comes the bad especially in the way offenders use and have used social media. For starters, I have seen some social media posts from police departments looking for certain suspects and then those suspects have taunted these departments. Offenders not only use social media to steal information and attack targets, but they also use it to heckle the departments looking for them. Then on the flip side, departments have used social media to obtain the whereabouts of offenders rather quickly. Social Media has become a tool that good and bad can be used for many different reasons. I have seen social media used for funny reasons by law enforcement and then again, we have seen how offenders have destroyed lives by social media as well. According to Allstate Identity Protection (2020), social media is a tool used by cybercriminals to locate victims and obtain personal data. A scammer may deceive you into giving money or disclosing personal information by pretending to be an online buddy. A phisher could obtain information for a highly focused attack by subscribing to your feed. There are ways to protect yourself, however, nothing is ever 100% safe. Offenders use social media not just to steal information, but child predators use social media to stalk victims and even choose their targets. We forget how dangerous social media can be, as a parent even though my children are young, I still have to be cautious about what I post. For example, back-to-school posts. I make sure to post the bare minimum, but I still get worried because anyone can see what I post even if I have my post set to “only friends” (Ali, 2021). Again, social media is still becoming more and more popular, and for good reasons. Even when technology advances and adds more capabilities, it offers a platform for regular communication between friends and family. Social media is used by 4.3 billion people worldwide, with kids being the biggest users. For instance, 5.7 million people under the age of
eleven have accounts on Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook. Age limitations are in place on each of these social media networks in an effort to prevent young children from using them but, that doesn’t stop kids that are considered underage by social media definition from creating accounts (Ali, 2021) I could write so much on this subject. Now when it comes to law enforcement, they use social media to fight crime. Facebook in particular is exposing community risks to law enforcement. In their efforts to protect and serve, an increasing number of police agencies are discovering the value of social media as a useful tool for their investigations. Social media is being used by police agencies nowadays to solicit public opinion. Police have started using social media and other online platforms to carry out sting investigations. Using Facebook or other social media to entice pedophiles with fictitious profiles is a typical example (Allstate Identity Protection, 2020)/ Also, With the development of social media, location-based sharing has gained enormous popularity. This metadata is a valuable tool for law enforcement to locate suspects since it connects text, images, and video to a precise location. A program called BlueJay is being used by some police departments to analyze tweets in order to detect events that would be of interest to law enforcement and to pinpoint the acts of known offenders. Social media networks are advantageous for police departments looking to engage with the public as well as for criminal investigations. These days, police departments almost always have to have a social media presence. It enables law enforcement to notify the public of significant announcements and to request information regarding criminal investigations. Police agencies can benefit greatly from having a social media presence when it is used effectively (Allstate Identity Protection, 2020). Again, I could continue to write about this subject and make this discussion into an essay, but I think we all can agree that social media has many advantages and disadvantages when it comes to using it whether in law enforcement or just in general.
