With over 90% of the total child labor market employed in the rural areas of Asia and Africa largely due to lack of enforcement, it is argued that something has to be done. Although the majority of people are ethically appalled by child labor, and against the exploitation of children, is the worldwide eradication of the worst forms of child labor really a feasible alternative? For the US and the UK as well as others have relied on the use of child labor during their time of industrial development. This is a large reason why some third world governments are willing to turn a blind eye to some of the practices going on in their countries. Because there is hope that they too will develop industry by attracting foreign investment with the lure of cheap labor, and one day be able to emerge as an industrialized nation as did the US and the UK. So how does child labor help increase investment, and make children better off? This is a very strong argument for the proponents of child labor. The governments of these countries understand that a child working 14 hours a day in a factory isn't what is best for that child. But when you consider the alternatives, is working in a factory for less than a dollar a day really making a child or their future worse off? Some would argue no. Sub–Saharan Africa has an estimated 48 million child workers. Approximately 2.5 million children are working in industrialized and transition economies. Child labor is also reported in Italy, Portugal, UK, US and Eastern Europe. The Children's Rights Division at Human Watch says that children who work long hours in dangerous and unhealthy conditions, are exposed to lasting physical and psychological harm. The Children's Rights Division gave some examples of work that children are harmed from. Working at rug looms, has left children disabled with eye damage, lung disease and stunted growth. Children making silk thread in India dip their hands into boiling water that burns and blisters them, breath smoke and fumes from machinery and medical care if often not available. Recently, child labor has become a large topic of debate; however, in most cases, it is very unfavorable. Parents, living in poverty, sometimes have no other choice but to send their child to work for income. Around the world, there are many organizations trying to eliminate child labor, by promoting policies that heavily tax goods created by child laborers, or by persuading people not to buy products made by children. The premise is good, and it can work; however, it can also aggravate the situation, because it can leave a child jobless with no way of earning money to survive. Regardless, child labor is widespread (Buckley, 1). Many multinational companies, such as Nike and Wal–Mart have been accused of indirectly using child labor to manufacture some of their products.
