The Strengths-Based Approach Professional social work endows different approaches to solving problems in the community. the strengths-based approach is applicable in all scenarios where exemplary outcome is needed. According to Franklin (2015), as a holistic and multidisciplinary strategy, strengths-based approaches focus on individuals' strengths, including personal strengths and social and community networks, and not on their deficits. An example where a strengths-based perspective could be used to promote a client’s self-determination is during the recovery form a crisis. For example, during the Covid-19 pandemic, the social workers were keen on the precautions taken to combat the impact of the virus such as using facemarks, regular washing of hands and sanitization among others. Strengths-based perspective could be used in this scenario to encourage people not to despair, rather uphold the preacutions for a better outcome in the wake to fight Corona virus. At my agency, I have used the strengths-based approach in helping individuals affected by racial segregation overcome their low self-esteem associated with the consistent discriminatory practices. For example, I consistently praised a client whose recovery from depression was cosnsitent by applauding his extra efforts he displayed in ensureing he resumed his nomal life. I therefore, realized that strength-based assessment is the measurement of internal and external emotional and behavioral competencies that enhance one's ability to develop relationships, deal with stress, and promote optimal development as stipulated by Franklin (2015). With continued support from my agency, strengths-based approach has impacted my professionalism as I engage in different mainstreams of social work practice. I have managed to capitalize on my strengths such as outstanding communication and exceptional problem-solving abilities that are founded on agility skills which reflect on every environment and area of
practice. Therefore, I capitalized on strengths and ignored my negative characteristics making me appreciate my value in providing humanitarian services in the community. References Franklin, C. (2015). An update on strengths-based, solution-focused brief therapy . Health & Social Work, 40 (2), 73–76.
