2 Social Imagination C.Wright Mill’s explains social imagination as the ability to recognize the relationship between history and culture and individual behaviors. To understand why people behave the way they do we need to dig deeper into history and culture. This concept coined by Mill help in studying social issues such as domestic violence. Social imagination helps us understand the history of domestic violence in that society, the culture in relation to families and if there is a desire for change. Defining Domestic Violence Domestic violence can be defined as behavior patterns portrayed by one partner in an intimate relationship to maintain power and authority over the other partner. Domestic violence is prevalent in many countries in the world. The World Health Organization estimated that 30% of married women are affected by domestic violence ( Violence against women ) .The people that are mostly affected by domestic violence are women and children. Due to cultural factors, women are often expected to be submissive and not to question the man who is considered the head of the family authority ( Violence against women ) . Many women die to lack of financial independent and unfavorable cultural practices end up in abusive relationship and become battered. Battered means that they are used to getting physically and emotionally abused and immediately their abusive partner apologies they forget all about the beating. They form trauma bond with their abusers.
3 Using Social Imagination to Understand Domestic Violence Domestic violence is influenced by social factors at individual level, community and society level. Kendall (2018 ,p.7) says that individual problems such as domestic violence can be linked to the larger picture that is the societal factors. At individual level, women who are in abusive relationship may blame her for being born woman. Domestic violence may seem as the particular individual problem but looking at it, it affects the entire society. Social discrepancies like level of education leads to domestic violence. Rituals and norms within the society are factors that contribute to domestic violence. Domestic violence can be understood by looking at the history and culture of that particular society. For example if the society has history of marrying young girls before they attain the legal age, there are great chance of domestic violence targeting the women occurring. I f the culture permit wife punishing, then domestic violence is directly encouraged. Social imagination is a successful tool in solving some of the domestic violence factor such as low self-esteem among battered women. The thinking that women are the inferior gender that do not need to be paid close attention to, can be changed through social imagination. The society can be made to change and view women problems as not being individual but societal. Battered women rise children that think domestic violence is okay and the cycle continues for that society. There is a need to provide social support to victims of domestic violence. The society respecting women and listening to their issues won’t kill their culture; it will make the society a better place.

4 Conclusion The social imagination concept allows domestic violence blame to be taken away from an individual and placing it to the society. This allows the society to look at it culture and history and determine the causes of this evil. Social imagination helps the society not to point fingers to victims but to evaluate the societal factors leading to domestic violence. This helps us understand and solve the issue from a societal view point rather than at an individual level.
