Social Class And The Middle Class Essay Social class can be defined as a social construct which is used to describe a group of people with similar levels of wealth, influence and status. They tend to have dramatically different values and mannerisms to others groups, for example, the working–class are seen as uneducated and unskilled workers, whereas the middle–class are seen as highly educated people with high incomes (Harcourt, 2016). Despite there being other social class groups, including, the upper–class, this essay will explore the portrayal of the working–class, lower–class, also known as the 'underclass', and the middle–class in reality television, using the example of Wife Swap. The working class and the lower class groups have been increasingly visible on British television screens in recent years, mainly because the increasingly popular genre of reality television features them heavily (Morley, 2009). Debates have sparked on whether the use of ordinary people on such programmes is democratising or exploitative. It could be argued that because the working–class were not on such programmes, audiences and society therefore had no access to them and their lifestyles. However, the great exposure of working–classes on reality television programmes now provides access to them and allows people to observe and judge how they behave and how they live. It is not a recent discovery that disadvantaged individuals, families and communities are portrayed in negative lights by the media (Crossley and Slater, 2014), Get more content on StudyHub.Vip
Middle Class Essay I have come to understand that a big part of what has shaped my life has been my class. I would identify myself as middle–class, due largely to my parents careers. Being middle class has come with many benefits, including the accessibility of a college degree due to my middle class status. It has only been through taking this Introduction to Women's Studies class that I have had to reflect heavily on my privileges. Being a middle class citizen also affects how people see me as I move through the world. This status is not something that I have worked for; instead, it is something my parents have given me. This speaks to the unjustness that exists in American society. I have done nothing to deserve my status of middle–class, only being born ...show more content... I have not had to face the stereotypes that people of lower income tend to face so it is important for me to read pieces like this to help me understand other people's experiences. Jordan wrote her article in a way that was extremely empowering and I felt like it gave a voice to a group the I do not see represented very often in text. I have been educated in a fairly patriarchal and conservative way from the time I was young. It was only in coming to college that I saw what a lie the welfare queen stereotype is. I have been challenged to think of a person not only as a number, but as a valuable individual. I think that to better understand why a person is where they are financially, we need to look both at the economic systems in place, as well as past events. In her essay Jordan describes all of the things that African American individuals are not responsible for, including, unemployment, racial hatred, the American concept of women, and the dominant value system. I hold people of target identities down when I buy into and perpetuate a stereotype or continue on with my life as though nothing is wrong. By making middle–class people like me aware of this we might be able to make a positive impact on the future. I am further advancing my opportunities by obtaining a college degree. Due to my middle–class status this doesn't seem like such a big feat, it is just what is expected of me. Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

Establishing Confidentiality Case Study Upon observation of Precious I became aware of many differences between she and I. I am an upper middle class, 34 year old Caucasian woman. Conversely, Precious is a 17 year old African American woman who lives in poverty. Additional observations about our differences are that I was raised without abuse in my home, while she suffered abuse her whole childhood. Moreover, I observed some less obvious differences between the client and myself. For instance, Precious is socially withdrawn and quiet, where as I am confident and extroverted. Furthermore our education level is very different. Precious struggles with educational delays and just achieved a seventh grade reading level, while I have my bachelor's degree and am working toward my master's degree. Establishing Consent/Discussing Confidentiality In order to establish consent, I would first explain confidentiality to my client verbally as well as the instances in which confidentiality can and needs to be breached. I would also give this explanation of consent in written form for the client to sign. Following this step, in order to be sensitive to the client and ensure she understands confidentiality and consent, I would explore the reasons she is seeking help. Through this exploration process I would use the techniques of empathic responding and motivational interviewing to establish rapport with the client. Empathic responding and motivational interviewing will also help to ease any reservations Precious may Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

The Rise Of A Middle Class Essay Early nineteenth century France gave rise to the ultimate social class called the Bourgeoisie. The Bourgeoisie consisted of the factory owners, wealthy bankers and the rest of upper class and their prestigious employment positions. The upper class glorified a life full of glamor and materialism. In contrast, the lower class or the working class came to be the proletariats. The working class appreciated hard work and strived to improve their circumstances; however, the Bourgeoisie strived to ensure the rise of a middle class did not occur in order to retain their reign in France. Over time, the gap between the upper and lower class grew and attitudes of jealousy and resentment among the lower class showed and these attitudes were seething among other proletariats in excess. As with any shift in culture, the authors, and artists of the time capture the change and attach their perception on influences the time period. In the nineteenth century France, the authors, and artists moved to realism, which reflects more truthful settings and everyday life and pulls away from idealism. A great example of a work of realism in this time period comes from Gustave Flaubert's work Madame Bovary . Madame Bovary follows the life of Emma and Charles Bovary and highlights the lows and highs of pinning for a Bourgeoisie life in a way where the reader feels this story could be about them. The effects of a life of excess reflect in Madame Bovary through the characters, the character's interaction Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

Middle School Essay Ever since I came to this school, I have been participating more, but there are times where they call on me and I don't respond or I just say I don't know.In middle school, I have been using to study for everything, now I haven't been studying as much.I haven't really been preparing myself before tests/quizzes but for the upcoming finals, I am going to be studying the most because for sure I don't want to be failing 9th grade. When I have a bad grade in a class, I will usually be asking for help or questions like how can I raise my grade up.I do that because I want the teachers to know that I'm a serious person and that I care about my grades. This is a bad year for me for turning in homework.I usually turn homework in late or I don't even turn it in time and that's a very bad habit. ...show more content... Social Class Vs Middle Class Essay We should care because the middle class is being exploited financially and socially. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. The wealth gap is further increasing and the middle class growing narrower and narrower. However, this narrow group of Americans is the ones paying the taxes to keep this government operating, which doesn't seem logical. The middle class will be faced with more taxes. However, these taxes are not benefiting the middle class that much, instead, they are helping people in poverty as well as the rich in case of bailout or even filing bankruptcy. The middle class has to work even harder because they don't receive the same benefits that other socioeconomic classes receive. So the more the middle–class works, the more they will be taxed on. This becomes a cycle that can't be stopped. The middle class doesn't get any help from the government because they are the ones supplying the government. Many of the middle–class members are blinded that these taxes are for the general good including them, but the general good does not ...show more content... Essay On Middle Class Life for the middle class during the Middle Ages was noticeably easier than the peasants, but still not as glorious as the nobles. As the increase of cottage and textile industries became more apparent and important, there was an increase for jobs as merchants. These merchants eventually became capitalist and continued to increase investments along with profits. The common peasants would become more urban, moving in towards the cities and towns, instead of to the rural areas, and became wage workers. As middle class merchants became more prominent, there was an increase in competition for jobs that left many people unemployed and companies underemployed. The middle class was becoming a more diverse group of people, from wage workers to entrepreneurs, all experimenting with new opportunities to increase socially and economically in status. ...show more content... For example, someone puts out cotton, which is later turned into a shirt, and then sold for a profit. The system was pro–industrialization and was a system that worked. As the industry rapidly grew and expanded, the job competition increased among citizens, and often helped out the middle class society. As the "putting out system" increased and became prevalent, the cottage industries boomed. As peasants were less tied to the land, they began to seek other opportunities for employment. There was an increase in mercantilism and trade, as people were able to utilize the raw materials being sent over from the United States. These exportation and importation of raw materials eventually lead to the Navigation acts. As the advancement in status is raised among the working class, small industries began to emerge and we start to see a more educated elite come into Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

Middle-Class And Education Growing up my family was considered middle–class, we had a typical nuclear family, my father was university educated and worked a white–collar job and my mother was a stay at home wife. I had attended private schools early in my education and public schools up until I completed secondary education. it was apparent to me that private schools typically geared students to strive towards white collared jobs whereas, the public school I attended was mostly geared towards students attaining blue collared jobs (Fletcher, 2017). Most of my friends in high school became tradesmen or service workers. After graduating from high school I began working in the service industry and still do work as a casualised employee. What Is A Middle Class Family Essay When I hear the term "Middle Class" I think of people who are able to make ends meet, with possibly a little left over for personal matters. When I hear the word "poor", I think of people or families who do not have enough money to make ends meet. I would think of my family as a "middle class" family. 2 working parents that have two children and we can go on vacations, but have struggles some weeks with financial situations. That would be my definition of a working class family , a family that can live "average" but save enough money to go on vacations/trips. I think middle class families typically live in the big cities while rich families typically live in the suburbs of the big cities. I believe that the cost of living in the suburbs Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

Essay On Middle Class Good (time of day) America, I am quite aware we are busy people, especially people of the middle class, working 40 plus hours a week, so I will try my best to keep this brief. Today's middle–class faces some of the biggest challenges and progresses to get worse and worse every year, day by day, slowly but surely the income gap increases, separating the one percent of citizens from the lower ninety–nine percent. America also faces physical and infrastructural problems that need serious attention. This is where I will apply myself in, The United States Executive Branch, and better the country to its glorious and profitable self as it once was. Together we can reestablish a better economy, recreate a realistic middle–class standard, which currently does not have an economic value significantly higher than lower classes and lower than other country's middle class. To better America's living quality, I plan on increasing mandatory vacation days and increasing minimum wage to 15 dollars by 2020. Americans deserve the ability to work a single job and not worry whether they will meet financial standards in order to pay for basic necessities. Increasing mandatory vacations will give my fellow Americans more time to spend with ...show more content... The American Middle Class Essay The American Middle Class When we as human beings are born into this world, there are things that we have control over, and other things that we have no say in. We control what we do with our lives, what schools to attend, what activities to be a part of, and who we marry, for example. This seems to be quite fair, and for the most part, we take it for granted. While we do have these kinds of freedoms, there are other aspects of life that we have no control over. One thing that we are born into, is our social class. No matter who you are, there is a social class that you fall into, and you really have no say in it. The one social class that seems to be the most populated is the middle, or working class. These people usually classify ...show more content... We don't drive fancy cars, or own expensive jewelry . I remember being small and asking my dad if we were rich. He would always say yes, but that we weren't rich with money. We had a healthy, loving family, and we were rich in happiness. To me, all of this adds up to a pretty normal family. When we say normal, we take in to mind what we see on TV and in magazines. TV plays the biggest part in our country's depiction of normal because pretty much every household has a television. If you asked majority of Americans what their idea of a normal family was, they would probably describe something similar to my family; two married parents, a few children, living in a ranch style house, in a middle class neighborhood. Even though this is our idea of normal, it really doesn't seem that way anymore. TV families are changing, and fewer "normal" families can be seen on today's sitcoms. The divorce rate is always getting higher, more and more families are moving into brand new subdivisions, and getting away from the normal seems to be the thing to do these days. I think that the vision of "normal" is slowly changing, mainly because the middle–class families are changing. To me, middle–class and normal go hand in hand. I believe that the middle–class is considered to be our idea of "normal" because the population of middle–class people is a lot higher than those in the lower and upper Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

My Family As A Middle Class Family I am a white, female, born into a family who originated from Hungry. I grew up not knowing much, if anything at all, about my ancestors and where they came from. My family didn't talk about where I originated from, in fact, I just found out my ancestors were from Hungry just a few years ago. My family would be considered a middle class family. We have always been "well off" in my eyes, which to me just means we have always had our needs met. We have never been abundantly wealthy and I have always seen my parents work really hard to provide for my family. In return, I was raised to be a hard worker myself. I pride myself on hard work and determination and would rather work to achieve my goals and aspirations than having them handed to me. We moved around a lot growing up, so I have been exposed to different cultures and different cities my whole life. I currently live on the North side of Fort Wayne but have lived in Indianapolis and North Carolina before. I grew up going to a Christian school for all but one year of my elementary, middle, and high school career. I was raised as a Christian, who attends church and has a strong faith in Christ. My faith has always been important to me and is a deciding factor in many of the decisions I make in life. Growing up, I never felt like I wasn't a part of society. I was a white American, which in my school was the majority. I didn't have many kids in my school that didn't share the same culture as me. The Middle Class Contrary to the popular belief that the middle class is a general term describing a cohesive group of people who are neither rich nor poor, the classes in the middle consist of three separate groups: the upper–middle class, the lower–middle class, and the working class (Marger 112). Although these groups share many similarities, they have distinct characteristics that distinguish them from one another. First, those in the upper– middle class are usually salaried workers, have significant autonomy and prestige, have higher levels of education, work with ideas rather than performing physical labor, and are very active in politics, contributing money to political campaigns. Second, those in the lower– middle class depends on a mix of salaries and wages, have less autonomy and prestige than the upper–middle class, lack significant wealth, have lower levels of education, are generally routine production workers, and while they are politically involved, their participation does not typically extend beyond voting. Lastly, those belonging to the working class have the least wealth and education of all three groups, have limited prestige and autonomy, are involved in manual and physical labor, are less politically active, and often do not take satisfaction from their work (Marger 116–119). During the majority of twentieth century, several historical factors have contributed to the expansion of each of these groups. As discussed in lecture, the working class experienced a major Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

Middle Class Stereotypes Stereotypical Life of the Middle Class White Male Measuring in at six feet, four inches, born a caucasian male, and a member of the middle class, life is not all sunshine and rainbows like most claim. The white, middle class male, in my opinion, is the most accused member of the all social classes. Now, yes that is just an opinion, but if a survey were to be taken, more often than not, that opinion would be agreed upon. I am the son of two successful working parents and grew up in a suburb in the lovely state of Minnesota. My father, a medical device marketer, has been at the same business for over thirteen years and has worked day in and day out to be where he is now. My mother , a lunch lady at a local public school bounced around a few ...show more content... The word rich is thrown around like a rock on the lake shore. Very similar to the work love, people use it like it has no meaning. Many seem to ignore the fact that there are hundreds of different ways to become rich. Of course, some are handed the money due to deaths in a family , retirement, rich ancestry, and lots of other ways as well. In my case, that is not how it worked. But for some reason, often times, close to about five times a day, I would get called rich. I was not a kid who had all the newly released hockey gear or electronics. As a matter of fact, I did not get a cell phone until I was thirteen years old. Out of my friend group, I was the very last one to get a cell phone. Growing up playing hockey, my dad had a rule that I could not purchase a stick over the price of one hundred dollars. My dad would gladly like to be the first one to tell you, hockey sticks are not cheap. Still, I would get called rich by my friends. I had a bigger house but nothing breath taking. I had four siblings and a dog, we needed a bigger house to fit all of us. Luckily growing up, I did not take much offense to the criticism. As a matter of fact, I did not really take it as criticism when I was younger. The term never really hit deep until I reached high school . The slurs continued as I attended a public high school after graduating from a private grade and middle school. Perhaps that was why kids called me rich. Shortly after my freshman year, after I took a personal finance class, the way money worked was clearer to Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

Middle Class Reflection Essay I am a cisgender, straight, caucasian, male that was born into a middle–class family in the heart of the midwest. Many people looking at the previous sentence would make the assumption that I have not experienced much discrimination, and although this is true of my personal life it is not true of my witness of the lives around me. I have in many ways had a unique opportunity to care for and serve those around me that are a part of the minority. As a student of a public school system I have had the opportunity to come alongside and build community with many people that do not share my same biases. Throughout the years there is only one thing that I am sure of, and that is that people inherently have value, just because they are people. In ...show more content... I knew that I live a very fortunate life, but it did not really click until I saw for myself the living conditions of those that had been affected most by poverty. Like many I believed a string of lies about people caught in poverty and those lies included: they do not have higher educations, they are lazy, it is their fault, or they can not keep a steady job. I realized that all of those statements are false, and I have a string of stories that go with each of those. I could tell you about the man I met named RE that was a firefighter for years, when a tornado devastated his house and left him in a FEMA trailer for the past 30 years. I could tell you about the man named paul that is homeless in Des Moines with a college education, and his life financially wrecked by a lawsuit. I could tell you about a woman named Rita who despite being homeless herself spends hours in back breaking labor running a food bank in downtown Des Moines. These people and their stories have affected me a lot and inspired me to be a part of combating the issue of homelessness. Regardless of financial class, people have value just because they are Get more content on StudyHub.Vip

Middle Class Reflection As a caring person, I should be able to recognize and realize the social differences between genders and races; I should also have the knowledge, skills, and disposition in order to make everyone in the group feel appreciated and involved. One way that I have done this is through my experience in helping teach the diverse kindergarten Sabbath School class at my church. On any given Sabbath we have about 15–20 kids in the room ranging from Asians, Hispanics, to Americans; the first Sabbath I helped out I was tremendously overwhelmed; however, as time went I recognized what needed to be done and did it. One of the ways I relate and help those who have more energy and shorter attention span is by bringing them into the story I'm telling. I do Get more content on StudyHub.Vip
