2 The Overnighters Discussion 1. What are some of the challenges Boom towns face? Housing shortages, high cost of living, infrastructure problems, environmental issues, crime and violence, social and cultural conflicts, and lack of social services and support networks for the newcomers. 2. The church does a background check on each of the overnighters. In your view, does the community have a right to know what those checks will uncover? The community may have a legitimate concern for their safety and security, especially if some of the overnighters have violent or sexual offenses in their past. On the other hand, overnighters may have a right to privacy and a chance to start over without being stigmatized or discriminated against. The church may also be morally obligated to protect and serve the overnighters as part of its mission. 3. What are some of the other ways that a community can support people with a criminal history? By providing them with access to education, training, counseling, mentoring, and employment opportunities; creating a culture of acceptance, forgiveness, and inclusion; advocating for criminal justice reform and alternatives to incarceration; and collaborating with other organizations and agencies that work with ex-offenders. 4. How would you feel as a member of this church? Town? I may face some moral dilemmas, such as: whether to support or oppose Pastor Reinke's actions; whether to welcome or reject the overnighters; whether to trust or distrust the
3 newcomers; whether to help or ignore the needs of the community; and whether to follow or challenge the norms and values of the society. 5. Do you believe that the murder of Sherry, the teacher, would have occurred if Williston did not have an influx of outsiders coming for work? I believe the murder would not have occurred since the influx of outsiders may have increased the risk of violence in Williston by creating more competition for resources, social tension, and conflict. 6. Do you believe that the program did more good than harm or vice versa? Why? The program did more good than harm by providing shelter, food, warmth, hope, faith, and community to hundreds of people who otherwise would have been homeless or hopeless. 7. What could have been done differently to help The Overnighters Program be more successful both for the community and for the recipients? To improve The Overnighters Program, I would have set clear rules and expectations for hosts and guests; communicated openly and honestly with all stakeholders; sought more input and feedback from different groups; established partnerships and collaborations with other organizations and agencies. 8. Some men had to leave their families at home. What is the impact of the dislocation and separation from family? The effects of being uprooted and cut off from family can be devastating, leading to increased tension, mental strain, as well as strained relationships. To assist families affected by such factors is crucial, whether through therapy or other means.

4 9. What are some policy changes that should be looked at in the town of Williston to support the booming oil industry? Policy adjustments that might be taken into account to support the expanding oil industry in Williston might include making investments in infrastructure, as well as transportation, to handle the influx of workers better, putting rules in place to ensure security for workers and safeguard the environment, as well as encouraging environmentally friendly and ethical development practices.
