Chapter 3 on page 45 Questions to Consider: one paragraph of each question. 1) Which sector of society -- nonprofit, private, public -- do you see yourself working in? Why? Which of the questions raised by the reading with regard to that sector resonate with you? Why? I see myself working in the private sector. Private sector comes with multiple advantages when compared to other sectors of society. First and foremost, I look forward to becoming a social entrepreneur as well as a diplomat. From this perspective, the private sector offers myriad opportunities for me to learn more about social entrepreneurship that not only generates profits but to a larger extent promotes a positive and social impact. I am significantly inspired by Jeff Deutsch (one of the practical idealists) who developed his design skills in the private sector and later contributed immensely based on his experience to Oxfam’s communications department (). Besides the experience, the private sector in most cases offers greater pay as well as more opportunities for career progression. As such, most private organizations and companies regardless of their size tend to invest more learning as well as development of their employees especially the ones who show potential for further help in growing the companies. Some of the questions raised by the reading with regard to private sector that resonate with me comprise the bottom line that I would like my employer to work for and the impact of impetus behind the company’s creation to me. As such, I would like to work for a company that integrates social and environmental concerns into its decision-making practices. Further, I would like to work with a company or organization that anchors its operations to making the world a better place. 2) Which of your skills, values, and/ or passions do you think will be important to finding a job you like?
Some of my skills that are important to findings a job that I like comprise strategic management and administration, communication, and negotiation. These skills come in handy when engaging in diplomatic duties as well as interacting with different professionals from different parts of the world. Further, they can be used to create lasting and win-win relationships that will not only lead to career group but also push me to levels where I can fully utilize both my values and passions in improving lives. It is worth noting that by using the aforementioned skills to interact with different people globally, I would be at a better position of learning while at the same time gaining insights on how to improve myself and be of great importance to others. One of my passions is business innovation and creativity. To a larger extent, I am always thrilled by the business that identify new ways or minimally explored ways of improving our lives. Most importantly, I understand that working in such companies help gives one an opportunity of contributing to such changes. In this regard, I believe that finding a job that is aligned to the aforementioned passion will help me put my skills to practice and even learn. 3) What was your favorite quote from the reading? What does it mean? Why did you think it was important/ interesting? My favorite quote from reading is: “Practical idealists can focus on social change issues in the private sector in a multitude of ways.” This quote implies that one can be a practical idealist even in the private sector. Given that in the reading most of the practical idealists are professionals who were from non-profit and public sector of society, the quote appears to dispel any doubts for anyone working or wishing to work in the private sector and still become a practical idealist. Furthermore, the quote appears to emphasize on the importance of skills, values and/or passions when it comes to pursuing the course of becoming a practical idealist. As such, they are more important than
the sector of society that one is in. The most interesting aspect of the quote is pegged on the main focus of practical idealism which for this case is social change. Regardless of the field or area of specialization that one pursues, practical idealism can only be achieved by focusing on issues that promote social change. Reference
