Explain the connection between privilege and religion. There is a distinct connection between privilege and the majority religion, Christianity. Those in the Christian religion are able to have all of the major holidays off of work and school, there are laws based around the christian religion as well as several churches and places of gathering in every town/city. Those who are a part of the dominant religion are often not discriminated against or oppressed based on their religion. Many of our traditions as based upon the christian religion even those who do not consider themselves actively religious celebrate holidays such as easter for the easter bunny and Christmas for Santa, presents and the traditional holiday gathering to celebrate family. There are many community supports for those of the dominant religion and there is always a sense of community unlike those in the minority religions who often are discriminated against and feel ostracized. In history and even currently people are killed because of their religion. The privilege of being of the majority religion is vast. · Describe a situation in which members of a religion experience privilege. A common situation of members of the Christian religion experiencing privilege is that all of the Christian holidays, everyone has off for regardless of religion followed. Every public school is off, they are considered federal holidays. Whereas Jewish holidays are not federal holidays but, they sometimes, depending on school district, get off for major holidays like Yom Kippur and Ross Hashanah. In my area there is a large Jewish population therefore major grocery stores, like ShopRite, will set up displays and make sure that there is Kosher blessed foods, KFP (Kosher for Passover) available during passover. · Then, describe a situation in which members of a different religion experience religious oppression. A situation that is well known for antisemitism is the Holocaust. Members of the Jewish community were oppressed and slaughtered based on their religion. Those who follow the Jewish religion were targeted and stereotyped because of their religion and then killed. To this day there are still attacks on those who belong to the Jewish population. There seems to be a lot of misconceptions around the Jewish religion that social workers would have to educate themselves and apply cultural humility to treating Jewish clients. This is especially the case now as many Jewish people are being killed to this day in Israel which is creating distress in the Jewish community that is felt even here in American. There is fear that Jewish members of our community will be attacked based on the fact that they belong to the minority religion so much so that there is now an armed guard in the local Shoprite because the owners of the Shoprite are Jewish and cater to the Jewish population.
