Discussion Thread: Identifying the Central Issue in a General Epistle Bratt sickman replies: Bratt, I see your angle and where you went with "The Book of Hebrews was written to warn and encourage early Christians who were turning away from Christ." This book was definitely a warning to the early Christians about turning away from Christ. I understood it that Hebrews tells us that Christ Jesus is better than anything mere religion has to offer. It was looked upon as the people revered angels, prophets and Moses more than Jesus Christ himself. As it stands we know that none of them can compare with God. I can see how some Christians or even the targeted audience could have lost their way into believing that Moses was the one to revere since he indeed did deliver from enslavement in Egypt out the ruling under Pharaoh. This letter was very necessary in helping believers not only find their way, restore their faith but to persevere. I see today, how relevant Hebrews is as some Christians are losing their faith, especially as a result of the pandemic coupled with the state of the economy, but I say to that It wasn’t as if they had lost their faith, they apparently never had it in the first place. Additionally, Hebrews challenges us to remain faithful and sometimes that can be hard especially now but it says, "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, it is the evidence of things we cannot seen"(Heb 11) Bratt I enjoyed reading your post. It was well written, insightful, and very informative. I personally really enjoy the epistle of Hebrews. The part of Hebrews that I enjoy the most is found in ch. 11 when it talks about the "hall of faith". This chapter is filled with stories of how people believed God against the odds. This chapter alone shows us how God can and will do the supernatural in our lives when we believe. I like how you stated "practices such as abortion, homosexuality, and the denial of religious freedom, as well as the popularity of moral relativism, are all ways in which the world is calling followers of Jesus to
walk away from Him and join the popular crowd." We live in an age where its so much easier to go our own way and follow what seems to be popular. Reading your post really shows that some of the same issue that was going on in this letter is the very same issue that goes on in our world today: "Christians losing faith and turning away from God, reverting to a sinful lifestyle contrary to Jesus' teachings." This is why it is of the utmost importance that we, as believers, hold fast to our faith in God.
