Explain the connection between privilege and religion.
For many, religion plays an important role in one’s identity. Often times, it
serves as a guidance to one’s belief system and behaviors, provides a source
of comfort, and brings about as sense of community and connection to
tradition. Although religion is a huge part of history, “sometimes, religion
serves as a unifier of people and an agent of social control, while at other
times, it contributes to social conflict” )Marsiglia, F. F., Kulis, S. S., & Lechuga-
Peña, S. (2021). When it comes to religion and privilege, it may be safe to
state that there are certain religions that receive certain advantages in
society, while other religions are often ignored, overlooked, and
marginalized. As well all know, there are several religions that are practiced
throughout the world: Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Indian religions,
Buddism, Atheism, and so many more. However, it may be agreed that
Christianity is by far practiced the most, and as a result, “Christian Privilege”
is an advantage that has been inherited by Christians.
Describe a situation in which members of a religion experience
privilege.
As mentioned above, because Christianity is practiced more than most
religions, Christians often experience more privileges, this holds true in both
education and the workplace. For example, Christians are able to send their
children to Christian based schools beginning from Kindergarten through
College, while other religions are not provided with such privilege. In
addition, within the workplace, those who follow a Christian belief system are
able to celebrate certain holidays of their faith (What is Christian Privilege).
Then, describe a situation in which members of a different religion
experience religious oppression
.
One of the most traumatic forms of oppression in religious history is that
known to be the Holocaust. Over six million Jews were killed by the nazi
German Regime and its allies.
