Explain the connection between privilege and religion. Describe a situation in which members of a religion experience privilege. Privilege and religion can be connected by the more dominant religion that is selected in one region. In the United States, Christianity would be the more dominant religion. Christianity has its own U.S. holidays such as Easter & Christmas and there is a vast number of Baptist, Presbyterian, and other Christian-based churches around versus other religions. Christians also receive privileges by being able to speak aloud about their faith with little to no contrary beliefs while other religions may be frowned upon or receive harsh criticism for their opposing beliefs. As a Christian, I do believe there are more constructive and welcoming ways to teach a non-believer the Gospel without using such a threatening tone. For example, I frequently see "teachers" have signs that read "You are going to Hell, repent now" with a megaphone, shouting at people who walk by. In order to be effective, I believe that you should be able to teach your religious beliefs with empathy and understanding, not with force. A forceful tone would be more likely to push someone away versus them taking the time to listen to you. Then, describe a situation in which members of a different religion experience religious oppression. A religion that may experience oppression would be those of the Muslim faith. Throughout history in the States, there has been some conflict and discrimination, especially after 9/11. The treatment of Muslims was based on fear and ignorance. Another way that Muslims are oppressed is through their options for prayer. The Muslim faith requires prayer five times a day. I remember in elementary school, there was a Muslim girl who would have to stop and pray in the back of our classroom because there were no other available options for her to pray. I remember kids laughing and even trying to interrupt her during this time. To show more acceptance and diversity schools could benefit from having quiet spaces or multi-purpose rooms for those different religions or beliefs to complete their prayers.
