1st part:
What is a worldview and what are the implications of a worldview?
How might one’s worldview shape one’s view of psychology and Christianity? Explain using
citations from text and scripture.
2nd part:
Found in Chapter 5 of the McMinn (2011) text is a discussion on the “relational nature of sin
and healing” (p. 194). Expound upon the concepts presented: the 3 acts, relational theology of
sin and healing, and finally, the mission of God.
Part 1
A worldview is simply the perspective lens through which one looks at the world around them
and the understanding of their place in it (Entwistle, 2015). It helps shape not only the way they
interoperate with their surrounds but also determines the behaviors they deem as acceptable
or not as well as how to respond in light of the activities they perceive and receive. A secular
worldview holds the position that life is constrained to the workings that take place in this life
and no more. A Christian worldview by contrast, upholds that one should evaluate life through
the lens of eternal matters as there is a second life of either redemption or damnation.
Ephesians 2:2 talks about those who live in a secular worldview as living according to the ways
of the world (English Standard Version Bible, 2022). However, Peter invitations us live a life of
the chosen generation and of a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9-10). Indeed, we who call ourselves
Christians are to stand apart from the world with our eyes fixed on the things above (Colossians
3:2). This means we think, act, and react differently.
Part 2
I must confess, the majority of my adult life I lived in a legalistic worldview when it came to
Christianity. When I sin, I suffer the consequences until my debt was paid. But what about Jesus
paying my debt you may ask. Galatians 3:13-15 says that Jesus paid the price for our sins
breaking the curse (English Standard Version Bible, 2022). I know this to be true in my head but
not in my heart. The result of this is I can know this while not acting or believing it. However,
through the grace of God and the mentorship of amazing individuals He placed in my life, I see
things differently now. As McMinn (2011) mentions, I too see sin and grace in three parts. Part
one being that we are created to be relational beings. The first time God says something isn’t
good is when He sees that Adam is alone (English Standard Version Bible, 2022). He made us so
that we can experience love in relation. C.S. Lewis (1962) puts it this way, God created us so that
He can love us and we can share in His affection. The second part is that sin pulls us away from
God (McMinn, 2011). So often I was taught in church that sin is death. Though this sounds true
on the surface, there is more to it than that. Romans 6:23 says the “wages of sin is death”
(English Standard Version Bible, 2022). This is because when we sin our relationship with God is
damaged and we are separated from Him. Since God is life, when we are separated from Him
death is the result (Ezekiel 33:11). The third part is redemption (McMinn, 2011). It is through
the sacrifice of Jesus, the holy lamb of God, that our relationships is restored (English Standard
Version Bible, 2022, Colossians 1:20-22). God’s mission then is, and has always been, one of
reconciliation of creation into His loving arms (2 Corinthians 5:18-20, Romans 5:10-11,
Ephesians 1:7-10). Therefore, we should stand apart from the world for we are called above into
the family of God. Though, through our own actions, we are separate ourselves from the Father,
He has established a means of redemption and resortation.
