CASE STUDY: Ruth, a 28-year old mother of two, has been married for 7 years and, though she has many blessings, consistently struggles with family issues from the past, serious health concerns of her husband, and persistent personal mental health struggles.   She knows the gospel is true and has a testimony of the Savior but sometimes life just gets too hard and overwhelming.   She wonders how she can juggle “life” and incorporate the gospel and all the things she   should   be doing as a mother.   Her “mommy guilt” is always clouding her vision and she struggles to find a balance and peace in life.   In addition, recent “hot topic” doctrinal issues such as the role of women in the Church and Church views on homosexuality, seem to be wearing her down even more.   She questions the testimony she has and many days, is just grateful to be able to physically care for her children and not walk out   onher family. Questions What doctrines, teachings and messages from the scriptures and latter-day prophets and apostles have been shared that might help Ruth to find the strength to continue? What resources (talks, scriptures, websites, specific lines, quotes, etc.) are available that Ruth could examine to help her understand the mind and will of the Lord   on   the purposes of
adversity, the nature of   doctrine, and the application of the Savior’s atonement for everyday life? How can Ruth and her husband Bill, work together to solve these issues and gain greater happiness while strengthening their family? Your answers must be documented/supported by scripture, the teachings of the Prophets, and the Proclamation.  What doctrines, teachings and messages from the scriptures and latter-day prophets and apostles have been shared that might help Ruth to find the strength to continue?  I have learned that most times when we are feeling lost and trials become very hard, we something want to give up. But in D&C section 29 vs 4 - 6 "Verily, I say unto you that ye are chosen out of the world to declare my gospel with the sound of rejoicing, as with the voice of a trump. 5 Lift up your hearts and be glad, for I am in your midst, and am your advocate with the Father; and it is his goodwill to give you the kingdom. 6 And, as it is written—Whatsoever ye shall ask in faith, being united in prayer according to my command, ye shall receive." This passage of scripture shows that in good time and bad time Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ are in our mists. Barbara Thompson Second Counselor in the Relief Society General Presidency shared a quote that can help strengthen ourselves when we feel like we are lost, it said, "The greatest help we will have in strengthening families is to know and follow the doctrines of Christ." Because we know the Gospel is true, we can find the strength in that truth and in Christ Gospel.  What resources (talks, scriptures, websites, specific lines, quotes, etc.) are available that Ruth could examine to help her understand the mind and will of the Lord on the purposes of adversity, the nature of doctrine, and the application of the Savior’s atonement for everyday life? There are many talks, scriptures, and websites that can help. But I love a quote from The Family: A Proclamation to the World it said, "Encourage couples and families to live the gospel in the home. They should establish patterns of kindness, respect, and open communication so that all family members are comfortable discussing sensitive matters. Sister Carol B. Thomas
First Counselor in the Young Women General Presidency shared that, " Three principles that will help you strengthen your home and family are nurturing, sacrifice, and prayer." When we have these the Savior Himself taught us to nurture. Many times, He said, “How oft have I gathered you as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and have nourished you.” As you gather together in your family, you can do so much to invite a spirit of unity. How can Ruth and her husband Bill, work together to solve these issues and gain greater happiness while strengthening their family?   In the Family Proclamation to the World state, "By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners. Disability, death, or other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation." As a husband and wife your duty are to stand firm together in unity and love. In the Doctrine and Covenants the Lord says that parents are to teach their children “to understand the doctrine of repentance, faith in Christ the Son of the living God, and of baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of the hands, when eight years old. “And they shall also teach their children to pray, and to walk uprightly before the Lord” (D&C 68:25, 28). Elder Robert D. Hales also stated, " The key to strengthening our families is having the Spirit of the Lord come into our homes. The goal of our families is to be on the straight and narrow path." Elder Jeffrey R. Holland's closing remark in the April 2018 General Conference let an important message that can help to learn to labor together as brothers and sisters, husband and wife, and as a family. He quote, "In spite of what we all feel are our limitations and inadequacies —and we all have challenges nevertheless, may we labor side by side with the Lord of the vineyard, giving the God and Father of us all a helping hand with His staggering task of answering prayers, providing comfort, drying tears, and strengthening feeble knees. If we will do that, we will be more like the true disciples of Christ we are meant to be.
