Kirtland Apostacy and Aftermath “FOUNDATIONS” NOTES
[What important historical events and/or doctrinal teachings from class today could be considered “foundational” to the Restoration? Which of these might I want to write about in my final “Top Ten Foundations of the Restoration Paper” due at the end of the course? Why? (75 word minimum)]
The Kirtland Safety Society Bank is opened, and it does not do as well as they had planned, and it led to many worries over the financial stability of the church. Important to
realize that many banks in the US had bank failure, not just the Kirtland Safety Society.
Many people did not understand the differences between assumptions and reality, and this led to faulty conclusions about Joseph Smiths ability to be a true prophet.
Those already made vulnerable by sin are particularly brittle to assumption violations.
PERSONAL INSIGHTS & REFLECTIONS
[What important personal insights did I gain in class today? And from what I learned and felt, what is most relevant in my life right now? Why? (100-300 words)] We all have assumptions in the church. Sometimes they are implicit, and we are not even aware that we are assuming something. Like Brigham Young, I need to humble myself and let go of my pride to be able to open my mind. I need to be working on being humble enough to change my conclusions. Modifying your assumptions is necessary. The reason given is usually not the whole story. Humility is knowing there is a God, and you are not him. When we see ourselves starting to doubt it is so important to pray. Prayer keeps us close to God.
It is not the man we our following, it is the Lord. We have a sense of false clarity precisely when our judgement is most clouded. QUESTIONS/TOPICS TO PURSUE
