Discipleship Project – Following the Spirit Name: Instructor name: Brother Wilkins Class: REL 250-G, Section: 42 General Instructions Save this template on your computer with a filename such as “Jon Doe Discipleship Project.” Your writings and reflections for the entire project should be included in this one document, but the document is uploaded three times, once for each deadline in your course (Plan, Mid-Semester Reflection, Final Reflection). Follow the calendar and instructions in your course for submitting each assignment on time and in the appropriate assignment. Project Plan (Due in Week 03) Before writing your plan: Ponder what Elder Kim B. Clark (“ Eyes to See and Ears to Hear ,” October 2015) has taught at General Conference: “Whatever level of spirituality or faith or obedience we now have, it will not be sufficient for the work that lies ahead. We need greater spiritual light and power. We need eyes to see more clearly the Savior working in our lives and ears to hear His voice more deeply in our hearts. This marvelous blessing comes when we open our hearts and receive, truly receive, the Lord Jesus Christ, His doctrine, and His Church into our lives. We do not have to be perfect, but we need to be good and getting better . We need to strive to live the plain and simple truths of the gospel.” Elder Clark encourages those seeking to be good at getting better and to regularly ask ourselves two questions: a) What am I doing that I should stop doing? b) What am I not doing that I should start doing?" (CES Fireside, August 2015) Watch or Read following: o Elder Larry Lawrence, What Lack I Yet ? Ensign , October 2015 o View LDS Media: What Lack I Yet? Now spend some time reflecting on gospel principles/doctrines taught about Christ and being a disciple of Christ. Next, prayerfully identify and share one area of discipleship you would like to make progress on. Remember, you will be focused on improving yourself in this one area for ten weeks. Write a 300- to 400-word project plan answering the following questions: 1. Describe the area of discipleship that you want to improve in your life and what caused you to desire to work on this area in your life at this time. Share a doctrine or principle that inspires you to improve in this area and where it is found in the scriptures or Church publications. 2. Set a goal and specifically describe the steps you will take to develop the attribute you have chosen and apply the doctrine or principle to your life over the next 10 weeks. 3. Identify any anticipated challenges , and explain what you will do to overcome them. 4. Explain how you will keep a personal record or journal of your progress over the next 10 weeks. The area of discipleship that I had always tried to work hard in improving is strengthening my relationship with the spirit. When people often bare their testimonies about having the companionship of the Holy Ghost and how the Spirit was there during their time of heartache, challenge, or even when they need help overcoming adversity, I know I wanted to experience the feeling of the spirit like that in my future. I am sure that I may have already had similar experiences when following the spirits direction but, being how we are always use to our thoughts and decisions sometimes we can’t always distinguish the thoughts of the spirit or just the consciousness mind.
Some of the steps that I am going to follow while strengthening my relationship with the Holy Ghost is one; continue to pray on having the companionship of the Spirit by asking, “what might be keeping me from seeing the spirit in my life?” and “how can I see the spirit’s direction?” Two; ask in prayer to have experiences that will allow the Spirit to encourage me and help in my time in need. Three; continue to read the scriptures, feasting on the words of Christ because I know that it’s through the help of the spirit that will record the knowledge in my heart. I know that I will have to fast and be obedient to know that I will and can have the spirit accompanying me. Some of the challenges that I know that I will face will be the temptations of the adversary, I know that Satan will try his best to distract me from strengthening my relationship with the Holy Ghost. I know he will use social media, comparison, gossiping, and foul language of those around me. The one way that I have always kept a personal record of my progress and experiences is through journaling, I love talking about my thoughts, and experiences that I have had throughout the day through making my journal personal and creative with art or even pictures of where I was during the day. In Weeks 04-07, carry out your plan to meet your discipleship goal. Mid-Semester Reflection (Due in Week 08) Please give an update on the progress of your goal to improve your discipleship. Write a 300- to 400-word reflection answering the following questions: 1. How well are you keeping to your plan for improvement in the area you have chosen? What are you doing well? What are you struggling with? 2. What progress have you made and/or lessons have you learned so far? How have you grown? How have you improved as a disciple of Christ? 3. What tools and tips are helping you to be successful? Include scriptures, teachings of living prophets, and specific efforts you have made to bring about the change or improvement you desire. 4. What specific things do you want to improve or change for the duration of this project? 1. So far, I think I am doing pretty good with strengthening my relationship with the Spirit, I have been dedicating myself to be a better version of myself that I know my Father in Heaven wants me to be. Something that I think I have been doing really well in is being able to rely on the spirit more by being more observant in noticing promptings. I think something that I might be struggling with is having confidence in myself in knowing how to interpret certain promptings. 2. Something that I have learned about relying on the Spirit is learning how to strengthen that bond by reading the words of Christ and prayerfully studying. I have also taken the courage to ask my Bishop on how I can strengthen my relationship with the Spirit and how I use the promptings I recognize to inspire those around me. 3. Some of the tools that I have been using are reading general conference talks as well as some books that I have found at my local Deseret Book. I also have been volunteering at the Bishop’s store house everything other weekend as well as attending the temple. 4. Some of the specific things that I would like to improve and/or change is being confident in myself. In Weeks 09-13, make adjustments to your plan and continue working on it. Final Reflection (Due in Week 14) Please provide the final write-up on your experience improving your discipleship the past ten weeks. Write a 500- to 650-word reflection answering the following questions: 1. In your own words, describe the importance of the area of discipleship you chose to work on. How does this principle impact our daily lives? 2. Do you feel that you were successful in completing this project? Why or why not? What did you find easiest about implementing this principle more fully in your life? What did you find most difficult?
3. What is the most important gospel principle you learned this semester? How will you apply this gospel principle to your life going forward? 4. What are your future plans to improve as a disciple of Christ? How will you continue to grow in the area you chose to work on? What other area of discipleship do you plan to improve on? 1. The area of discipleship I chose to work on was strengthening my relationship with the spirit. I think this area is very important because it helps strengthen your relationship with Christ. A strong relationship with the Lord helps you not only see a better version of yourself, it also helps and inspires those around you to do the same. Relying on the Holy Ghost has a huge impact on our daily lives, when we constantly rely on the spirit, the spirit helps us make everyday decisions in the right way. I think the spirit has also influenced me to be kinder to those around whether I get along with them or not. 2. I think for this project I was pretty successful; I have always loved learning more about Christ and how I can be more like him each and every day, little by little. I have found that growing closer to Christ has provided me a way to be myself and not worry about what others think of me. I have always been pretty sensitive to my surroundings, so having the trust in the Holy Ghost and Savior in what I deal with on a daily basis has proved to me and testified of itself that I know that being on the Savior side gives me the relief and peace that everyone should be able to feel. I think by having the intention of wanting to grow closer to Christ by relying on the spirit shows enough evidence that I have full intention to want the spirit in my life. 3. The most important gospel principle I learned this semester was what Christ did during his ministry here on earth and how important it is to teach one another as well as testifying to one another. Being able to share something I am so passionate about gives me the greatest joy but having the spirit there with me provides me the relief and trust on the Savior to help me testify of what I have experienced. I think having of learned of this gospel principle I am thinking doing what the Lord did during His ministry is very important because all of God’s children should either learn of the gospel or be exposed to it some way. I think by relying on the spirit to prompt to those who need to learn or need an example of Christ will help me grow closer to the Savior as I grow older. 4. My future plans on improving as a disciple of Christ is that I want to treat those around me the way the Savior treat those around Him, I want to have the Charity and kindness He had when He walked the earth. This may be a little selfish of me, but I want others to see me as a disciple of Christ, I want to be able to be recognized as someone who would treat others the way I would treat them. I also want to be able to recognize those who have great intentions to be like Christ just as much as I do. I want to be able to recognize the spirit as I grow as a disciple of Christ, I plan of working on being selfless and charitable.
