What is APD (in your own words)? Auditory Processing Disorder is a hearing problem that can affect school-aged children in which a child will have difficulty with interpreting sound due to their brains and ears not being able to fully coordinate. What are some common symptoms and characteristics of APD? Common signs of APD include a child mishearing sounds and words, trouble with spelling and phonetics, noisy environments being overwhelming, and verbal directions being difficult for the child. What was your experience with the simulation? As a person who has an APD, this simulation was especially difficult, but I also was interested to see what a ‘simulation’ of what I deal with is conducted. I think it was interesting to see people’s reaction to how difficult it is when you cannot understand what is being said to you, and how communication is vital to everyday life. How might APD affect a child in a typical school classroom? Verbal instructions, which makes up the majority of classroom instruction, make it difficult for a child with an ADP to function. Other things such as a noisy environment in a room with their peers make the classroom experience overwhelming and hard for the child to focus on directions.
