People often do not help because they do not know how (University of Minnesota, Pg. 392, 2015). Unless we empathize, we assume others will act before we take the initiative to help. Altruism is all around us, evident in animals and lower life forms, but mostly in people with whom we are related or share similarities (Principles of Social Psychology, 2015). The social situation plays a large part in how people help, including how many others are around; studies showed that the more people around in an emergency, the slower the reaction time to calling for help (University of Minnesota, Pg.391, 2015). One of the most significant ways to change the bystander effect is to pay attention to our surroundings and assist when we see a problem. Our textbook discusses the diffusion of responsibility, assuming others will take action ( Principle of Social Psychology p.390). Recognizing similarities between oneself and others promotes a sense of oneness "between the helper and the individual in need," resulting in motivation to help (Principles of Social Psychology, 2015, p. 372). Some may recognize there is a problem but assume someone else will step in, which is called a Diffusion of Responsibility. I also find it interesting that some people tend to naturally be more altruistic or "prosocial" than others (University of Minnesota, 2015, Pg.396). Because the bystander effect heavily relies on the assumption that someone else is taking care of a problem, presuming there is no personal investment in an emergency, the solution is to apply a different hypothesis that induces action (University of Minnesota, 2015).
