2 Reflection: Introduction to the Master of Science in Psychology Have you ever been the go-to person your friends look to for advice? The reason is that you give non-bias but critical feedback. That's me; I always knew as a child I was different. What interest’s children my age didn't interest me. I was always into human behavior; I was curious why humans react the way they do. I believe my interest in human behavior stems down from my childhood. Let's say I didn't have a typical childhood. While children were playing outside, I was with my mother and father in the streets of Houston, Texas, watching my parents minister and feed the homeless. As a child, being exposed to this population prompted my question about human behavior. What am I looking forward to in this program? Entering into the Master of Science in Psychology, I look forward to learning the history and theory of the human mind. Understanding not just how others think but also understanding how I feel. This course will help me process and unlock doors in my own life, which will give me the tools to understand and process behaviors that I may or may not be aware that's happening. By being a case manager for the homeless population, I know this course will bring more knowledge on how to handle this type of population. Video Concept I have come across people from all walks of life in my career. Some have severe mental health issues and trauma. The video gave me some critical information on how psychology was the right subject to pursue. Understanding and appreciating the diversity in human behavior will help me in my role as a case manager. This subject will also help me better engage and emphasize the
3 diverse population—home life, learning how to communicate effectively with my husband and my children. Children go through different emotional triggers themselves. Knowing how to communicate with my child and listen will help me become a better parent. My support system The people that make up my support system would be my mother, sister, husband, and close friends. I would most likely turn to my sister when I give up or feel discouraged. My sister is someone who will be able to help me pull out of that dark place. What I have noticed is she listens to what I am feeling. She can help me analyze the situation and help me cope when I am feeling down. Why do I want to earn this degree? Earning this degree means more than just my career, but it's also personal. I want to be able to identify my issues and grow. This degree will help me in my career and help me in my personal life with my family and friends. It will teach me how to be a better Employer, mother, wife, sister, and friend. My goal is to grow as a human being. Conclusion Psychology ultimately will give me the tools I need to become successful in my career and personal life. There is always room for improvement, even if you feel you have it all together. As humans, what I do know is emotions change, humans change. Being able to identify changes will help me develop as a human being.
