Name: ___________________________ ASLP 4035 Speech Sound Disorders CONTRAST THERAPY APPROACH Purpose: It is essential for an SLP to be familiar and understand the various treatment approaches that could be used in therapy for a speech sound disorder. The Contrast Approach is comprised of three types: Minimal, Maximal and Multiple. The differentiation with the types is based on the contrast of the target words selected. This assignment will provide knowledge concerning all three types by critically thinking about what the SLP and client are expected to do for each step, determining possible speech targets and describing the differences between the various contrasts. Directions: For this assignment, complete the following parts: a. Answer the questions regarding the requirements for this approach. b. Describe the steps of Contrast Therapy Approach by including what the SLP and client would do for each step. c. List target word pairs (5 pairs for each process in error). d. Looking at each contrast type, describe how the targets are selected and give a minimum of two examples. Remember, the term oppositions also is used in place of contrasts. Child’s errors: stopping (initial position), final consonant deletion What is criteria for moving forward? Child’s progress (child’s progress, time, or insurance) What is required for this approach? Circle the correct answer…. 1. Sound is /is not in child’s repertoire 2. Important /Not important to develop cognitive awareness of contrast 3. Contrast must /must not show a difference in meaning Step State what the clinician does and what the client does 1. Perception of Contrast SLP: Using multiple picture cards ask the client “show me the sun”. Client: Client will point to the picture of the sun. 2. Production of Contrast SLP: Will model a set of 5 word pairs for the child and have the client repeat. 1

Use word pairs that contrast client’s typical error production to the target production. Examples: cap/tap or tore/door Maximal Contrast How to Select: Pick contrasts that aren’t homonymous and select target phonemes that differ in manner, place, voicing, or all of the above. One word is the target while the other is a sound that the client can correctly produce. Child’s errors aren’t used in production. 2
