1. Discuss why thoughts, feelings, or behaviors that are merely atypical or unusual would not necessarily signify the presence of a psychological disorder. Provide an example. 2. Describe the DSM-5. What is it, what kind of information does it contain, and why is it important to the study and treatment of psychological disorders? 3. What is your attitude toward mental health treatment? Would you seek treatment if you were experiencing symptoms or having trouble functioning in your life? 1.) Just because some thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are considered as atypical or unusual does not mean it signifies the presence of a psychological disorder. An individual may experience atypical inner experiences or exhibit unusual behaviors. However, he or she would not be considered disordered if they are not distressing, disturbing, or reflecting a dysfunction. For example, I myself might feel the need to stay up all night studying before the healthcare academy exam; although it is atypical, this behavior is not very likely to show any of the other criteria for psychological disorders mentioned. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5) is described as the classification system that most U.S. mental health professionals use to reach an accurate diagnosis. Published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Consists of broad categories of disorders and specific disorders that fall within each category. Information expressed in this handbook would be every disorder that has a clear-cut description of all symptoms, as well as information concerning prevalence, risk factors, and comorbidity. The DSM-5 provides a common language that enables mental health professionals to communicate effectively about sets of symptoms. I feel mental health treatment is very important to myself and others around me. I would seek treatment if experiencing symptoms or having trouble functioning in life. I feel if I wouldn't accept treatment, then I am not only hurting my family but others around me in society.
