Report
For this assignment, I examined two different forms of audiological curriculum. The first one I examined was the SKI-HI program, which is primarily focused on sending a Deaf mentor out to the homes of Deaf children to help them develop language skills. It was developed by three women in the deaf education field who researched into this deaf mentor program and found that by having a deaf mentor that regularly comes out to the homes of these children and shared language, culture, and personal accounts of deafness with these families, that these children developed a bicultural-bilingual home environment. When compared to children who had no deaf mentor but a parent teaching them, they found those with a deaf mentor made greater strides in their language development and scored higher on tests that assess communication, language, and syntax. This program works wonders in helping children connect to their culture while providing them an environment that is comfortable and encouraging, thus making it a great program to provide to deaf children. The second curriculum I looked into was the Developmental Approach to Successful Listening II (DASL II). This curriculum was developed at the Houston School for Deaf Children that was designed specifically to be easy to implement and could be done in a multi-step process that allowed for specific goals to be created. The child starts by taking a DASL placement test in a sound booth that is designed to examine auditory comprehension, phonetic listening, and sound awareness. This allows the therapist working with them to target specific subskills. This program was developed with the idea that phonetic listening and speech development should be worked on together. This program gives the clinician freedom to make activities for sub skills that are fun and engaging while also targeting specific goals.
Of the two curriculums, I really enjoyed looking at the SKI-HI program and would love to hear more testimonials from the families of Deaf children.
