Lalli et al. (1995) 1. What do the authors mean by the statement “probability of a response-class member can be altered by an operation placed on another class member” (2 pts) Lalli et al. (1995) discussed how the “probability of a response-class member can be altered by an operation placed on another class member”. In my understanding what they mean to say was that there is a hierarchical relationship that exists between the behaviors due to many factors. These can include the different responses of each topography, rate of reinforcement given or delayed upon behavior or simply the punishment that comes along with a response. Which makes response-class hierarchies concurrently operant. This means that there is an opposite relationship between the problem behaviors (class members) and trained functionally equivalent responses. Thus altering the way you engage or deal with one class member would most likely produce a result in another class member. 2. Explain what was observed when escape was applied to SIB (i.e., the last response in the hierarchy). Explain what was observed when escape was provided to topographies earlier in the hierarchical sequence. (2 pts) During the experiment when escape was applied to the SIB, a hierarchal sequence of the three topographies was observed. When escape (contingency) was provided to earlier topographies a discontinuation of other subsequent topographies within the hierarchy was observed. 3. List one clinical implication of this study that was provided by the authors. (2 pts) One of the clinical implications of this study was that rarely are the first escalation of a problem behavior researched, instead they are more likely observed. They urged people in the field to see how a topographical hierarchy is established and how one response class will lead to another such as in the case of screaming to engaging in SIB. Thus, targeting the initial sequences of behavior can lead to better management of the clients plans.
