Week 5 Study Questions 1. In 1-2 sentences each, describe the 4 conditions used in the functional analysis of this study. (4 pts). The four conditions were social disapproval, academic demand, unstructured play and alone condition. In the social disapproval condition the researcher would give his disapproval only when the participant would engage in SIB. These would be non-punitive measures that were taken and it allowed to showcase a contingency of reinforcement that maintains SIB. In the academic demand condition the experiemner used lest to most prompting hieracy in order to teach a child some form of educational activity. The trial ends and the experimentor shiled away from the participant when SIB occurs and there is a 30 second interlude between the onset and the researcher returning. This was done to gather data on wether or not SIB was maintained by negative reinforcment. Unstructured play was the control condition whereby the client was laced in a demand free open range envioment. Here the client was given no demand, were allowed to play with or enege with any item, social praise was delivered contingent on behavior displayed and SIB was ignored until gravely injurious. Alone condition the participant was in a room without the experimenter and without any materials that would classify as external materials that provide stimulation. Here the experimentors wanted to test wether the lack of reinforcements through external stimulation would lead towards an increase in the SIB of the participant. 2. Some of the participants in the study demonstrated SIB across all conditions. What did the authors attribute that to and why? (2 pts) The authors of this study outoined that a number of factors could have affected the participants high demonstration of SIB across conditons. They state that the maturity and the mental capacity of the particpants were so low that they were unablke to distinguish between the
conditions. Secondly the variables that maintain their behavior were simply not controlled in this present study and thus accouts for their high SIB across conditions. Lastly and perhaps most descriptive attribution would be that the response by the particants are multifaceted. This means that all the conditons above somehow tapped into their reinforcment contingency in one way or the other. The authors mention that this reasoning could very well mean that a multilayered approach and treamant plan cneeds to be applied to thses individuals to propely help them. 2. Why were lower levels of self-injury consistent during the control condition? (2 pts). There were lower levels of SIB during the control conditions simoly because the enicoment was an enriched one. An enviorment whereby there is no demand placed, open range acess to items without them being taken away or ply time being terminated serves as a great inhibitor of SIB. The authors also state that many reserachers have also come to the same conclusion whereby when a participant is given all they can need and nothing is taken away then the physical and social reinforcment of that negates most SIB from occurring. 3. By analyzing the graphs on page 205, which child has the clearest function for SIB and what is that function? (1 pt) Child number four would have the clearest function for SIB and that function would be maintained by being alone or having no form of stimulation.
