Week 6 Study Questions 1. What are some safeguards Poling et al. (2012) recommend clinicians put in place and researchers describe in their publications when conducting functional assessments? (2 pts) Poling et al. (2012) describe a number of safeguards used by Iwatta et al were were medical examination inclusive of auditoy, neurological and visual exams. Termiantion of observation when high risk level is reached was recommended by each participants physican. If level of SIB for grave injury was reached client would be removed from session and essentially reassed if they can continue after episode passes. Physical changes were examjed by nurse after each four sessions done. Each particpants case was to be reviewed weekly within departments and peers. Limits were placed on the length and number of sessions the participant enaged in. Being able to get informed consent is another safeguard mentioned and so is the usage of least restrictive alternative principle. Protetctive equipment usage and Have the research be approved by the Human Subjects Institutional Review Board (HSIRB) 2. What are some ethical considerations a behavior analyst must take into account when deciding whether to conduct a functional analysis? (2 pts) One of the first ethical consideration is to do no harm or primum non nocere, secondly the risk of harm shouldn’t be more than what they would normally experience in everyday life. Have the research be approved by the Human Subjects Institutional Review Board (HSIRB). Having the target behavior occur in its lowest form that can cause minimal SIB but enough to take good data which can be through brief FA. The rigjt to effevctive and appropriate treatmet for the client is championed. Proper training and usage of behavioral procesuder.
