Early Childhood 2 To whom it may concern, My name is Amina Denise Ash, I am a kindergarten teacher from Tennessee. This is my first year with this age range. I have a Pre-K teacher for four years prior to kindergarten. As an educator, I am a mandate reporter by law, and it is my duty to be aware of different bills not only in my state but also different ones I am looking into transferring too which is Atlanta Georgia. The bill I am about to discuss does affect the differentiation needs of our early childhood students and will be a great tool to use for many years to come. According to Senate Bill 48 “all kindergartner students must be screened for dyslexia and other learning disabilities” (Senate Bill 48, 2020). This gives all students the opportunity to get the services they need to succeed. Oftentimes as a teacher you will see parents deny certain services due to them not understanding what is going on with their child. g. The ability to learn from others first and then internalizing the knowledge to adjust to our own personalities (Social Development, 2018). This will only cause harmful effects for the child years later. By doing these screenings it will cut out the doubt right away and will get the child the help they need to be great. Of course, every child learns in their own way when it comes to mastering a new skill. Differentiation needs are supported by two main theories, the Cognitive theory, and the Social Development theory. Cognitive theory speaks about the concept of how we learn by observing people around us. It focuses more on our cognitive ability to memorize and rationalize behaviors and consequences by observing others (Nickerson, C., 2022). Educators can take these theories and apply in when they are making differentiating lessons, which must be adjusted for all the students in the classroom. It must be a good fit for all students, not just the ones that need extra help. Also, B. F. Skinner’s Behavioral Theory will also support the differentiation needs of our students because this theory states that learning leads to changes in the behavior of individuals due to their interaction with their environment. It is also important to have a safe environment for the students to learn. Maintaining this environment will help the students be freer and be able to express their feelings.
Early Childhood 3 For you to be able to provide differentiated instructions you will have to assess the students first to see where they are developmentally at, by doing this you will see if they already have domains or need more time. The first domain most can assess is Literacy and Language. During this domain students will have to pick out words they know from the sheet or a book. This will help students gain new words to their vocabulary. The second domain you can assess is General Knowledge/Cognition. During this domain the students will have to learn by making a connection with what they know and what they learn. Now at my school we assess this domain with HFW Booklet, it’s as everything a student should know, to what they will be working on mastering throughout the school year. One thing that I have learned as an educator is that it is okay to collaborate with other educators. This will help your teaching in many ways when coming up with your differentiated lesson. It might take someone who is totally different from you to help your skill of teaching to be able reach every student. For example, you will have different specialists and counselors that can help you with any student with an IEP or 504 plan. You will have to be able to work with others throughout the whole year to help your students. By collaborating with others your lessons will be more meaningful to all students not just some in your room. Lastly, differentiating instructions for your young children can lead to positive influence in the developmental domains. Educators can control their rooms, which means by this it is easier when you have a clear-cut lesson that is designed to fit each student. I do agree with students being screened for learning disabilities and dyslexia. It will not only help the educators, but also change the student life. They will be able to get the help they deserve. Also, doing the assessments will help with grouping your students in the classroom. Thanks, Amina Denise Ash
