The first part of the reading I found interesting was the explanation of how play therapy works to create a stress free environment that doesn’t feel like work while making progress towards appropriate behavior responses and problem solving skills. To my understanding play therapy is geared more towards children, and I would assume this is the case because playing would be the best approach to keeping a child’s attention while working towards the goals of the therapist. By creating a stress free play environment for the child to promote good behavior responses and problem solving the therapist is able to gain the trust of the child. Good behavior responses and problem solving skills can be promoted by correcting the child while they’re playing or working together to come up with a solution. 2.) The second thing I found interesting in the reading was how play therapy promoted feelings of empathy and also promotes social skills. There are several ways I believe a therapist can promote empathy through play therapy. Therapists may take initiative to promote sympathetic feelings for others by helping the child comprehend what they have in common with their peers. Therapists could also use literature through play to promote empathy. There are more techniques of course, but I believe these examples provide the right idea of promoting self-regulation in order to achieve empathy in children. Empathy and social skills honestly go hand in hand but social skills that are beneficial to children that can be learned from play therapy are the ability to express feelings, modify behaviors, and successfully communicate with others. I found an example online that I wanted to include with my reading that involves a communication play technique. A therapist who is wanting to promote communication with the child may use puppets during a play session and have certain situations while playing with the puppets that prompts the child to respond to different social situations using their own puppet. I loved this example because it shows how easy it is to promote social skills with a child without making it feel like hard work. 3.) The reading didn’t directly address the last thing that I found interesting but it lead me to do more research on my own to find certain groups of children that benefits the most from this form of therapy. Through my research I found that children with autism and ADHD benefit tremendously from play therapy, and some even believe that play therapy reduces the symptoms of ADHD. Since play therapy promoted empathy and social skills it would be successful in helping children of these categories to control their impulsivity, which is a major problem within these two groups. Empathy could allow them to feel that it would be unfair to cut in line or take a toy from a child who isn’t done playing with it. Social skills would promote their communication with their peers so they can ask to take turns or play appropriately with their peers. While both of these were addressed in earlier points, I didn’t point out how anxiety can be reduced by promoting these skills.Children with ADHD or autism can suffer from anxiety because their impulses get the best of them and they may become frustrated when their decisions do not yield the reaction or consequence that they expected. By promoting both of these skills anxiety can be reduced because it gives the child a sense of control over their impulses, and they now
