1. Describe the ways in which your personality traits have influenced the development of your social change identity. Personality can be defined as the way you portray yourself which subsequently helps establish a sense of identity. Some personality traits that I identify with include conscientiousness, agreeableness, & openness. These personality traits have influenced the development of my social change identity because my identity is determined by what makes me unique including morals, values, & beliefs. The mix of personality traits are associated with certain characteristics. For example, my agreeableness trait shows how easily I can get along with others due to my ability to empathize with them while openness implies that I am willing to listen to multiple perspectives & try new experiences. I see myself as being a mentor and these 2 traits combined influence my ability to emerge myself in new experiences & gain knowledge that I may use to redefine or build upon my current belief systems and or values which shape my identity. 2. Describe the ways in which your lived experiences have influenced the development of your social change identity. I identify as a black female within the lower middle class currently but that has not always been the case. In my earlier adulthood, I would consider myself to be between poor & working socioeconomic class. As I experienced poor living conditions, lack of resources, & poverty with my child I developed a sense of resilience which helped me overcome obstacles faced as a single black mother. The experiences I faced as a single black mother have shaped my beliefs and values & influenced my social change identity because I draw upon these experiences to make decisions on present situations. Experiences help me shape my goals in life. I grew up not having a big support system and felt like i had no one to express my thoughts or feelings to. Because of experiencing this situation as a child, I now want to be a counselor or mentor to other children especially within the black community due to the lack of resources and positive mentors available I experienced myself. I lacked guidance growing up now I want to be the person lending guidance consequently developing my social change identity. 3. Describe the ways in which your social influences have influenced the development of your social change identity. Social influence is the change of an individual's beliefs, attitudes, or behavior affected by a person, group, or social environment. Social influences have influenced the development of my social change identity because as I interact with others, I experience people who hold the same as well as different perspectives. I hang around people with like values & beliefs to confirm as well as sustain my social identity. Sharing my ideas with likeminded individuals confirm my ideas or way of thinking. To challenge my beliefs, I will interact with people who hold different perspectives. I identify with a group of individuals who don’t identify with any religion. It’s not we don’t believe in God, it’s some of the teachings that we believe are not factual. I identify as bisexual. Religions have different codes of sexual morality which regulates sexual activity or assign normative values to certain sexual charged actions or ideas (Wikimedia, 2023). I don’t
believe that my sexual orientation that goes against the norm makes me a bad person. I believe it’s the character of a person, moral values, & ethical decisions a person live by. This belief was shaped by my social interaction with others and gaining perspectives of what is seen as sinful. These informational interactions help me sustain my identity and decrease the occurrence of cognitive dissonance. 4. Describe the ways in which your willingness to be psychologically vulnerable has influenced the development of your social change identity. Psychological vulnerability (PV) is defined as “a pattern of cognitive beliefs reflecting a dependence on achievement or external sources of affirmation for one’s sense of self-worth” and indicates a person’s inability to adapt to stressful situations (Nobre et.al., 2022). My willingness to be psychologically vulnerable influences the development of my social change identity because PV shapes how I feel about myself & identity based on the perception of others allowing the feelings of shame, guilt, or fear to possible arise. Being vulnerable puts me at risk of showing emotion and showing of true expression. By allowing this to happen I can then become self-aware of why I have certain feelings as well as reveals ways I react in different situations. Being self-aware of situations that show my vulnerability allows me to better understand myself & build upon my sense of identity. I identify as a strong-willed person. To maintain this belief, I must take risk despite the difficulty of the path ahead remaining resilient and assertive. 5. Describe the ways in which resilience, growth mindset, and emotional intelligence have each supported the personal growth that has contributed to the development of your social change identity. Resilience allows me to push through difficult situations. I believe struggle shapes the character of a person. The decisions I make while going through tough times promote a growth mindset. If i fail at a task, I don’t let it define who I am or what I’m capable of. I use the experience as a learning opportunity. Growth mindset describes a way of viewing challenges and setbacks. With hard work and resilience, I am able to get through any barrier. Emotional intelligence includes my ability to manage my emotions as well as understanding others & their emotions. Key elements of emotional intelligence include motivation & self-awareness. As I gain an understanding of myself, I gain self-awareness as well as motivation to improve & achieve person goals to further establish my identity. For example, to become an effective mentor I must try to connect with children who are very introverted. I must have emotional intelligence and understand the reasonings behind the standoff behavior which may be due to environmental factors. Having the resilience to break through the guard of an individual and make them feel comfortable in expressing themselves to me supports my personal growth of my ability to connect with people which further develops my social change identity. Overcoming this difficult task helps me sustain who I identify as within my social role of being a mentor. Nobre, J., Luis, H., Oliveira, A.
