Describe how the motive of belonging contributes to your social change identity. In the Background of Susan Fiske’s 5 Core Social Motives, it states as people of a society, “we want a small community of people to accept us no matter how our prevailing beliefs, norms, or culture are perceived by others in society” (Fiske, n.d.). The motive to belong contributes to my social change identity because it drives my need to find purpose within my society. Due to this drive, I wish to belong to a group with a high urge to help others. If I want to fit in to this group of helpful people and fulfill my sense of belonging, I must mold myself and establish the necessary personality traits & characteristics associated with this identity to conform. Describe how the motive of understanding contributes to your social change identity. My character trait of being helpful contributes to my personality traits of being kind, empathetic, and compassionate. In order to obtain these traits, I must have a sense of understanding about who I believe myself to be as well as who others identify themselves as. I must form an understanding of myself and the group I wish to align myself with to see if that is where I truly belong. If I cannot form an understanding with others, I can’t feel compassion or empathy for others and their diverse situations or experiences. This means I won’t be able to truly help a person which contradicts the identity I hold to be true. Describe how the motive of controlling contributes to your social change identity. The motive of controlling contributes to my social change identity because as I interact with people, I want to control the ideas they form about me. By controlling the narrative, ideas or stigmas surrounding my identity won’t manifest as truth. For example, I identify as an African American woman which holds a negative personality trait such as being argumentative. Being a teen mom is also a part of my identity. Making people informed of who I truly am to the core dismisses the possibility of incorrectly identifying me or associating me with traits I don’t identify with. Describe how the motive of enhancing self contributes to your social change identity. The motive of enhancing self contributes to my social change identity because I must consistently gain knowledge in order to align myself with my desired identity. The knowledge I gain while making interactions helps me add addition info which may reconstruct the schemas I have developed. By allowing myself to be teachable, I am able to reconstruct/adjust my beliefs which guide my identity due to the understandings I develop of myself and others while truth seeking. With time comes changes and we must enhance ourselves by enhancing our knowledge in order to adapt to social change while still remaing tied to our roots & morality. Describe how the motive of trusting contributes to your social change identity. The motive of trusting contributes to my social change identity because I must trust my own ability to sift through and separate facts from fiction in order to make logical & informed
decisions. In order to make a logical decision I must trust that the interactions I have with like- minded people are truthful about their intentions or beliefs. Building relationships & friendships are a part of my social change identity because I use the information they provide me to make decisions about who they are to shape what I think about them which strengthens social bonds. The bonds I make with people are shaped with my understanding of them and with understanding brings trust. My values and beliefs make up my social change identity therefore I must trust the information I’m using to mold my values & beliefs are rooted in facts & good intentions. Describe how your knowledge of the five core social motives can help you to counter the effects of social changes . My knowledge of the five core social motives can help me to counter the effects of social changes because I am able to use these 5 motives to analyze the changes that are occurring. I can use the motives to look at how and why the changes occur building an understanding. I can then use this information to enhance my knowledge. Social change can bring questions that effect beliefs which can question your belonging of a group. You must trust that your principles and beliefs are rooted in fact and be able to adapt to the change. Knowledge of the five core social motives also help with understanding the personal and social factors that influence a person’s ability to embrace individual differences that guide social change. Adapting to the change based on the way you understand it helps you stay in control of who you identify with and understanding helps control how the changes will affect you personally. Fiske, S.
