Amisa Walker SNHU PSY 322 4-2 Journal: Raising a teen. As I reflect on the challenges of raising a child between the ages of 10 to 14, known as the pre-teen and early teenage years, I find myself reflecting on the many effective strategies I used to ensure a healthy and supportive environment for my children. One strategy I maintain with my daughters is open communication. Especially with my adolescent daughter who is now 14 – at this age they start seeking more independence. I have created an environment where my child feels comfortable expressing her thoughts and concerns in a respectful manner. Always encouraging open dialogue about school, friendships, and personal challenges that she may be facing. I have set clear boundaries with my daughters all while encouraging independence, establishing guidelines helping provide a sense of security and structure. As I mentioned in my previous journal, I have set rules about screen time, sleep schedules, and expectations regarding academic responsibilities. Looking back on my childhood and incorporating insights from the course, I acknowledge the importance of comprehending the psychological changes during this phase. As I continue to read this course readings I have identified with the idea of authoritative parenting- which encourages independence but places limits and controls on adolescents, is associated with socially competent adolescent behavior. (Santrock, 2019). as covered in the course content, aligns with my beliefs. Striking a balance between providing warmth and support and setting
clear expectations is key to fostering a positive parent-child relationship. This method promotes independence while sustaining a robust emotional connection.
