1 PSY 108 Project Three Milestone: Career Paths Analysis Job Description Summary Job Title The job I have chosen for Project Three Milestone is Investigative Psychology. Job Roles and Responsibilities Investigative psychology is a new field of applied psychology. Investigative psychology works within the criminal justice system, and it is a specialist field within forensic psychology. Investigative psychology is closely related to forensic psychology but is more concerned with police decision-making than with the court system and helping victims. "Professor David Canter coined the term Investigative Psychology in the early 1990's to draw attention to the fact that there were many ways in which psychology could contribute to criminal investigations and as such, a new field of applied psychology was emerging," (David Canter Investigative Psychology, n.d.). Prerequisites for the Job Investigative Psychology ia a field within Forensic Psychology, and the training and education is very similar. You must obtain a bachelor's degree, then typically a master's degree. You must also work under the supervision of a licensed psychologist before earning your license. The specific state regulations vary. Primary Industry or Type of Business Investigative psychology works within the criminal justice system, and it is a specialist field within forensic psychology.
2 Connection to Psychology "Investigative psychology seeks to improve our understanding of criminal behavior and the investigative process," (Taylor, et. al, 2015). A study that focusses on the psychological input in the investigations of criminal acts by, retrieving information from the crime scene for the purpose of analysis and research, making decisions during criminal investigations and analysing criminal behaviour. Connections to Emotional Intelligence Self-Awareness and Self-Regulation When analyzing a crime scene, self-awareness is important due to the emotions one may feel due to the horrific nature of a criminal act. Self-regulation is choosing how to respond to those emotions, and to react in an appropriate manner to ensure a proper analysis of the scene is completed. Then further taking those analysis and understanding the criminal behavior behind the criminal act. Social Awareness and Conflict Resolution As an Investigative Psychology investigator, your social awareness and being able to perceive what others are thinking and feeling, their emotions, will aid in understanding their criminal behavior. An investigator may run into conflicts during their investigation, like sharing a crime scene with other specialized units, they must realize these conflicts and work through them to aid in their completion of their work. Ethical Judgment and Empathy In the criminal justice field, your ethical judgement is imperative and should be considered one of the most invaluable traits in this field. As a Investigative Psychologists, you must base your
3 decisions on evidence, and your ethical decisions should be based on those facts. In the field of law enforcement, it is hard to not have sympathy for the victim(s), but you must ensure that empathy does not fog your decision-making.
