1 ASSIGNMENT #3-D. Enhancing memory storage (35 points) Instructions: For this assignment, you will be graded on how well you apply the concepts from this unit to your own experience of memory. Higher grades will be given to those who use the terminology correctly, apply a variety of concepts from the unit reading, and demonstrate college-level writing skills (correct spelling, punctuation, grammar, organization). You will lose points from your score if your paper has typographical errors or is poorly written. Submit the paper in the usual way, attaching it to the submission page on Blackboard. First, watch this video: Mind Palace (Simple Guide) - 5 Steps to Remember Things With a Memory Palace - YouTube Then, look over this website: How to Improve Memory for Studying (7 Powerful Tips) (magneticmemorymethod.com) For each question, response length is recommended to be one or two paragraphs of (about) 5 to 8 sentences each. For higher point questions, be sure to give sufficient information to demonstrate conceptual understanding (and generally, these answers should be longer). 1. Please explain how the Mind Palace (Method of Loci) could be used to memorize a long word list. It might help to give an example using a short list of 4 to 6 words. (10 points) Mind Palace can be used to memorize a long word list by starting with the first 3 words. Remembering the order of the words by starting off with the first few. Once the first few words come naturally when trying to recall the word list you would add another, and another and another. Repeating the words on a routine basis will allow the person to recall without issues. If we use this list of words for example, Mischievous, Mastered, Monster, Malicious, Machine. Starting with the first two words, writing it down, and remembering the words and then after the remembrance on the order you would add a new word every time. 2. What is your experience of how your own memory works? For example, does it function well, or do you have trouble remembering things? (5 points) My memory works well to a certain extent. I feel as though I can remember things, in a repetitive order. For example, traveling a new route to my job, I might use the navigating to get to work for the first two weeks, but after that I am able to remember the same route to get to work. Things such as small as remembering where I put my keys might be a little more complicated. I would recall the usual places I put them, but sometimes I do not see them and that is where I have trouble.
2 3. Why do you think this is the case? (5 points) My memory might not work as well because I do not repeat certain things in the same order. Instead of making multiple palaces I might combine my memory together. This sometimes can give me misinformation and frustration. My mind might believe that I have put my keys in one area because that is where I usually put them. That would be called a suggestable sin. Falsifying my memory into what usually takes place. 4. What memory "tricks" (mnemonics) have you used previously to remember things better? Be sure to both identify and describe how you used them. (5 points) I have used proactive interference in order to remember things. Rehearsal helps when studying for the subjective of complicated subjects for me, such as testing and exams. Self reference is another trick I use. Knowing the meaning or how to use something in my own way or form allows easier access to the memory of the item. 5. First, review these concepts in the textbook (pages 269-272): Chunking, elaborative rehearsal, levels of processing, self-reference effect, distributed practice, rehearsing, sufficient studying, reducing interference, “keep moving”, sufficient sleep, and mnemonic devices. Next, give examples of two memory strategies – you haven’t previously used - that might improve your studying and/or ability to remember things. For each, label and describe the strategy, and then apply it to a specific example such as memorizing plant terminology or learning the parts of the brain. (5 points each/10 total) Example one: One memory strategy I would want to improve more is sleeping. I tend to barge my mind and not get enough sleep for my brain to be able to recall the memory. Which may allow misinformation due to lack of sleep. Example two: The second memory strategy I would want to improve is chunking. Allowing myself to group a certain set together will allow me to remember or even recall more. As I get older I deal with a lot of dates trying to recall one date with one person or one name will improve my memory.
