Theory Identification and Analysis Katelyn Napier MSW, Capella University SWK5003: Theory Identification and Analysis Professor Aileen McCabe-Maucher October 2023
Case study In the film Joe the King. Joe’s father was physically and verbally abusive to not only Joe but other members of the family. Joe’s father struggles with drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes. Joe's father is in debt to several individuals as a result of his gambling addiction. As a result of his mom’s adultery and difficulty managing the family's problems, Joe's mother rarely is home. She is not a caring mother because it is clear that neither her kids' needs nor their education are important to her. Joe and his brother barely interact with Joe's mother. Joe has bad hygiene, and the students at his school think he doesn't fit in because of his poor clothing choices. When Joe is outside and around his peers, he exhibits undesirable conduct like stealing and showing disrespect to others. Joe often assumes the role of his parents by making sure he and his brother eat, giving the impression that he is caring. Lundahl and Hull (2014) specify speculations that under the umbrella multidimensional approach can aid the case worker processes of evaluation, intercede, and evaluation. Listed are the steps used such as nature, evolution, nurture environment, psychological theory, learning theory, strengths-based approach, and person-in- environment approach. Evaluation of the Multidimensional Theory In order to examine Joe's family, I will apply the multidimensional approach theory in this essay. The reason why I picked this specific approach is because the family being examined has a culmination of several problems to which multiple theories could be applied. A proposed theory that aims to comprehend each specific condition has both strengths and disadvantages (Lundahl and Hull, 2014). A measurement context known as the multidimensional theory pertains to a subset of psychological characteristics that an individual assesses at a given time (Busemeyer, 2018). Sazi stated social worker A subset of psychological variables that a person assesses at a
given time are referred to as the multidimensional theory in the measurement context (2020). A social worker can apply the completeness over partiality critical thinking strategy in the multidimensional theory. Numerous issues plague Joe's family, including alcoholism, cigarette smoking, verbal abuse, humiliation, poverty, and sadness. Nature/evlolution: According to the theory of evolution, the theory came about as a result of its survival rate. Lundahl and Hull (2014) Genes originating from a biological process that provides a survival advantage have a high probability of being inherited by subsequent generations. The evidence originates from Joe's father, who passed down a genetic component that is inherited from generation to generation and is effectively instilled in his offspring for survival. In addition, Joe and his brother might adopt their father's survival strategies. Nurture/enviroment: According to the principle of nurture, learning determines human behavior. In other words, Joe and his sibling pick up social skills by watching an older adult, like his parents. Nurture can also include influencing factors including political structures, cultural norms, and customs (Lundahl and Hull, 2014). Joe and his brother picked up bad habits from the people around them. They have been exposed to bad behavior from their parents and teachers throughout their lives, which has affected their behavior. Psychological theories: Understanding human behavior through the progression of specific stages is the goal of psychological theory. Five distinct categories can be used to represent the hierarchy of human needs. Growing up can be impacted by not getting the proper amount of care and attention as a child. Joe's family did not provide him and his brother with the necessary upbringing or direction to enable them to flourish throughout their developmental phases. Although Joe’s father stated in the film that he used to have a good job and a pension could indicate that their family was on the right path but took a turn for the worse and that’s when the

bad parenting habits began. Learning theories: According to this view, behaviors that have been adopted through training modeling or other behaviors' concerns are acknowledged. According to McLeod, the operant condition was developed by Skinner (McLeod, S., 2018). It's highly possible that some of the habits in the film will be learned. Joe was able to provide evidence of having survived his problematic family. Joe was forced to eat, go to work, and take care of himself on his own. Joe had to resort to bad behavior in order to survive, such as stealing in order to meet his necessities. Joe may have picked up better-coping mechanisms and habits after being admitted to the juvenile detention facility, in my opinion. I believe that, because of their family dynamics and past issues, even though he may exhibit good conduct after leaving Juvy for a while, he will eventually revert to the prior actions that led him there. Strengths-based approach and person in the environment: The strength-based philosophy enables individuals to see the positive aspects of both their surroundings and themselves. The family fits this notion because they experience despair but also show some positive traits. Joe's family is a good fit for the person-in-environment approach because of their lifestyle and surroundings. Despite the fact that Joe's father is violent in many ways, Joe's father saw that Joe needed shoes, so Joe told him why he didn't have any. Lastly, when Joe was sentenced to go to Juvy, everyone came together and supported him during his transition from home to Juvy. Joe's father gave him money for a new pair of shoes, which was a surprise in the movie. There are also images of the family when they were younger throughout the home. At the end of the film Joe decided he wanted to walk home instead of ride in the car with his father, and Joe's father genuinely started crying, demonstrating that the family does have emotion and concern for one another.
Strengths and weakness You will determine your strengths and weaknesses while applying the multidimensional theory for assessment. According to Lundahl and Hull, 2014 This theory's primary goal is to make use of the ability to comprehend situations better because there are many factors that might influence a given circumstance. This theory's drawback is that it can be too much for a social worker to handle. Using several ideas at once might be overwhelming for social workers. Similar to the film, several things occur that you wish to examine and better understand using a variety of theories, but it might be daunting. Many theories can help this family better understand and communicate with each other. In the long run with Joe missing from the family the family may learn to appreciate one another more. The family systems theory, which is a method of understanding human functioning that focuses on interactions inside families as well as among families and the circumstances that they are ingrained, is my favorite theory as it perfectly describes Joe's household. Family systems theory can be utilized in many different fields, such as educational institutions structures; social issues (e.g., dealing with divided disagreements and enabling "hard conversations" as in the open DiscussionsThe project, the field of peace studies, peaceful methods. Psychological treatment as a whole and familial counseling especially working from a systemic perspective to deal with behavioral, emotional, or interpersonal signs in individuals, relationships, and households.
