1 PSY 108 Project Three Connections to Emotional Intelligence Investigative psychology involves analyzing crime scenes and criminal conduct. When doing so, I will experience the true evil of people and what they are capable of doing. This can have serious emotional effect on my emotions and actions and can also affect my family life and those whom I work with. It would be easy for me to get emotionally involved when investigating a criminal act that may "hit home," for example a criminal act involving a child. I have to separate myself from my emotions and understand the way to help victim(s) of this type of crimes is to catch the criminal and understand why they did it. The skills related to emotional intelligence for a investigative psychologist would involve self- awareness, self-regulation, ethical judgement, and empathy. I would have to understand how my emotions and thoughts may be affected, adjusting my behaviors to meet my goals, manage stress, have empathy for the victim(s), and ensure my decision-making is ethical and know the potential consequences. In this position you will have two sides to understand and relate to. One is the victim(s) and how they are coping with the incident and ensure their thoughts and feelings do not deter me from my job duties. The second is the criminal(s), and to understand not only what was done, but why and what was their mindset behind the criminal act. I understand I will have confrontations and disputes with both sides of a criminal act, the victim(s) and the criminal(s). My job is to focus on the facts which may involve the personal aspects of the criminal versus victim relationship. I will confront these disputes with the facts and remain patient and understanding of their emotional behaviors.
2 Connections to Psychology Understanding personality traits and what to observe in yourself and others to manage obstacles you may occur in this profession. I believe understanding not only your personality traits but also those you may come in to contact with, victim(s) and criminal(s), will help you resolve conflicts and be a better investigative psychologist. By understanding the personality trait of a criminal, may lead you to understand why they conducted the criminal act itself, and understanding the victim(s) personality trait, may lead you to understand why they were chosen o be the victim. Strategies to Increase Emotional Intelligence I believe I would need to work on empathy, especially for victim(s) of criminal acts. This is an EI skill I once had and appreciated, but loss after so many years of doing this job and separating myself from those it involved. Have an understanding or how an incident has affected an individual, by listening to them and knowing for them this was a tragic event. By responding appropriately to other people’s emotions, I would have a better understanding of the personal affect a criminal act may have on a victim(s) and their perpetrator(s). By understanding why a criminal may act the way they do in a particular event, would help me better understand the crime and the affect it may have on a victim. Increasing my EI skills in empathy would have an impact on victim(s) within my community. It would bring a positive impact on how I am viewed and how the agency is viewed.
