PSY 215 Module Five Milestone Template Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. For this milestone, you will use the Four D’s diagnostic indicators to analyze one behavior that might impair a person’s adaptive daily functioning. You will determine if that behavior could potentially represent a clinical disorder. Use your template to address the rubric criteria listed below with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences per bullet. Support your answers with a credible source when necessary. From the list in the Module Five Milestone Guidelines and Rubric, select one behavior that might impair a person’s adaptive daily functioning, then address the following: Major Depressive Disorder Distress: Describe the extent to which the selected behavior causes distress as characterized by mental or emotional imbalance. Depressive symptoms often include feelings of sadness or low mood. This can lead to a profound sense of unhappiness and hopelessness. Individuals with depression often experience anhedonia, which is the loss of doing things they used to enjoy. Depression is associated with negative thinking patterns, such as self-criticism, guilt, blame, and worthlessness leading to suicidal thoughts. This cognitive impairment can lead to frustration and imbalance of one’s self- perception and emotional state. Dysfunction: Describe the extent to which the selected behavior causes dysfunction by interfering with adaptive daily functioning. Major Depressive Disorder can lead to isolation and lack of interest in social activities. MDD can disrupt sleep patterns leading to insomnia or hypersomnia. This can lead to fatigue. Basic self- care activities, such as bathing, brushing teeth, eating regularly and even getting dressed become challenging for individuals who suffer from depression. Some individuals turn to substance abuse to cope with depression. Depression has been associated with various physical health problems, such as cardiovascular issues, and a weakened immune system. These are all things that can lead to dysfunction. Danger: Describe the extent to which the selected behavior presents as a danger to self or others. Suicide is one of the major concerns of MDD. Individuals with severe depression may experience intense emotional pain, hopelessness and despair which can lead to suicidal thoughts. Some individuals with depression turn to substance abuse to cope which can lead to unhealthy behaviors that may be a danger to oneself and others. The physical health issues that can arise from MDD can be a danger to health. Individuals with depression are more likely to harm themselves instead of harming someone else. Deviance: Describe the extent to which the selected behavior deviates from normality. 1
In MDD, individuals can be consumed by sadness and lack of interest in pleasurable things. This can become persistent for weeks or months. This is behavior that deviates from the norm. The negative thought patterns and distorted thinking along with social withdraw and functioning normal daily can become difficult. Calling in sick to work, maintaining employment, healthy relationships can become challenging when suffering from MDD. The persistence of depressive symptoms for at least two weeks or more are key diagnostic criteria for MDD. This deviates from the norm. 2
