PSY 215 Module Eight Activity Template For this journal activity, you will focus on reconstructing your view of what it means to be abnormal. Specifically, consider the notion of the humanity in abnormality. Then respond to the following prompts with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Address the rubric criteria listed below and support your answers with a credible source when necessary. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Discuss what it means to view our individual differences through a non-pathologizing lens. Viewing our differences through a non-pathological lens entails recognizing and respecting the diversity of human experiences, behaviors, and identities without automatically labeling them as abnormal or deviant. It involves acknowledging that variations in human cognition, behavior, and emotional responses exist on a continuum and can be influenced by cultural, social, and environmental factors. In recent times, people have begun to adopt a non-clinical view of psychological conditions—as differences, not disorders. Discuss the costs and benefits of viewing psychological traits, symptoms, and conditions in this manner. Viewing psychological conditions as differences fosters an environment of acceptance and reduces the stigma associated with seeking help for mental health concerns. This perspective can also empower individuals to embrace their identities and advocate for their rights without fear of being labeled. On the other hand, downplaying the clinical aspect may lead to the underestimation of the need for professional mental health interventions, potentially limiting access to necessary treatments and therapies. Another cost would be it might diminish public awareness of mental health and its complexity. Think of an abnormal behavior that may be viewed as a deficit or a weakness. Discuss how aspects of this behavior may be reframed and reapplied as a strength . Obsessive behavior may be viewed as a weakness but later become an asset. I used to obsess over substances and unhealthy behaviors such as gambling. Now that I am sober, I get obsessed about healthy things like my sobriety, children, school, and work. If I’m not careful I can go too far with even good things. It’s important for me to recognize when the behavior is having a more negative effect than positive. 1
