Probing is making statements or asking questions that are intended to guide or encourage the client to discuss more about their life and allow the counselor to hear what the reoccurring issues are within their lives. With probing however, the counselor needs to be careful not to push the client outside their comfort zone and over share to appease the needs or wants of the counselor. For counselors to get more emotion, thought, and information out of the clients probing should consist of either direct or indirect inquiries (Egan & Reese, 2019). Clarification is also a tool to be utilized whilst probing. Probing can cause clients to say things they don’t mean or also say things they think could end the conversation they don’t want to have. Clarifying the clients’ issues back to them can also demonstrate the counselors active listening and actively participating in the client’s treatment. The counselor should also understand that non-verbal communication can tell a lot about the client and the counselor should be actively paying attention to this.                       In my mock attempt at using these strategies I think I truly realized the difference in active listening due to my mock client reacting to every change in my demeanor. I need to work the most on my facial expressions. After multiple years wearing masks and still having to wear masks in the hospital I currently work at, my facial reactions are very expressive. I did also at one point interrupt my mock client with altered the course of the session afterwords and I have learned to be careful when it comes to trying to either redirect the conversation or limit the clients’ distractions this effort can come across poorly. Counselors need to be careful with their wording and behaviors. References Egan, G., & Reese, R. J. (2019).The skilled helper: A problem-management and opportunity- development approach to helping.
