1 U05A1 – Personal Model of Counseling Amina Malik-Dollison COUN 5239 – Theories of Psychotherapy Dr.Azra Karajic Siwiec November 14, 2021
2 Personal Model of Counseling Counseling can be viewed from many distinctive perspectives. In my experience of life and engaging with various groups of people with different backgrounds, I have found that many individuals ideas on counseling or any sort of mental health awareness were culturally based and sometimes the resulted in being positive negative, or indifferent. In my own culture the idea of mental health was indifferent meaning, that it was neither a “good nor bad thing.” As I grew into, my own understanding of what is mental health, I realized that my culture attributed to my wanting to take up the career in mental counseling specifically, to promote health awareness and its importance .As a counselor in training I have learned that theories of various scholars of the field is counseling, are the keystone in how the counselor will engage with their future clients and shape their mindset of techniques that are effective based on theory and that of the population that is being serviced. Motivation for Pursuing the Field of Professional Counseling as a Career My main motivation of pursing counseling is to promote awareness and help others in my own cultural community. I had many members of my family suffer from mental health and refused to acknowledge they needed help. Another reason is that my current position as a educator in a special education classroom; made me realize that I would excel in being a mental health counselor based on they way my students always felt comfortable with me to assist them with whichever issue that they had been experiencing. Between my colleagues and the student’s people would always look to me as listening ear and a problem solver. I understand that counseling is not solely based on problem solving. One of the key components of being a good counselor is being genuine and being able to show empathy for other and what they are going through. Those characteristics and mindset are qualities that I do possess and taking mental
3 health courses and pursuing this mental health degree will help me to be successful in working with my future clients. Personal View on the Nature of People As counselor in training my personal view of people, is that of everyone has a different story and come from backgrounds that have influence on their world view of perspective. With that understanding in mind, I understand that that my future clients will come from different walks of life, and that it my duty to be aware of the diversity and have the skills of culture competency. Theory that Most Resonates for Me from First Half of Course The theory that resonates most with me is that of the person-centered theory that is of humanistic approach. According to (Kottler, J. A., & Montgomery, M. J. (2019). “Person- centered therapy was developed by Carl Rogers in the 1940s. This type of therapy diverged from the traditional model of the therapist as expert and moved instead toward a nondirective, empathic approach that empowers and motivates the client in the therapeutic process. “The therapy is based on Rogers’s belief that every human being strives for and has the capacity to fulfill his or her own potential”. Person-centered therapy, also known as Rogerian therapy, this theory has great influence on other psychotherapy disciplines and is used great among many counselors (Kottler, J. A., & Montgomery, M. J. (2019). I agree with this psychotherapy approach because it align with my own personal beliefs and expectations for future clients. I believe that helping clients pursue healthy mental health lifestyle and assist in accomplishing major life changing goals.
