Name COU – 600: Research Methods & Program Evaluation Southern New Hampshire University Date Module Two Journal Entry Topic (Intervention/Technique/Theory) Subtopic (Population) Issue (Mental Health Diagnosis) Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Adult Females (18+ years old) Eating Disorders Research Question: Is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy effective when treating adult women who have been diagnosed with an eating disorder? Intervention, Technique, or Theory: The intervention that I chose for my research question is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This form of intervention is utilized for the means of recognizing and understanding the relationship between ones’ thoughts, views, beliefs, etc. and their actions, behaviors, responses, etc. More specifically, this approach pushes to identify thoughts and behaviors that are unhealthy, harmful, and/or irrational so that we are able to help our clients to determine their patterns of emotions and behaviors and change them to benefit them in a positive way. This is relative to eating disorders when we observe the relationship between the thoughts pertaining to food, body image, weight, etc. and their eating disorder behaviors. This study suggests that by helping to reduce college women’s inflated internalization
of the thin ideal and improving ones depressive symptoms via the utilization of a digital cognitive behavioral therapy guided self-help intervention can lead to improvements of ones’ eating disorder psychopathology (Graham, et. al, 2023). Population: After fighting with myself back and forth on what topic I was going to choose for my final project, I decided to go in a different direction with my topic. For my focus on this investigation in relation to the research question I have chosen to direct my attention to adult females (18 years and up) for a couple of reasons. The first reason being because females between the ages of 18 and 25 are more than 50% more likely to be diagnosed with an eating disorder than males (NIMH, 2010) and I think that it is important to learn as much about this topic as possible as this is the population and diagnosis that I would like to work with further in the professional world. The second reason is because I knew that there would be an abundance of relevant and supporting information pertaining to this topic of discussion that could help me to navigate through this assignment both efficiently and effectively. Mental Health Diagnosis: I chose the mental health diagnosis of eating disorders for a couple of reasons. The first reason is because there is an abundance of research, information and relevant sources pertaining to this topic and diagnosis. Now while this is awesome for me, I don’t think that this will make it any easier for me just because there is so much still to be learned on this subject. The second reason that I chose this diagnosis is because it is something that is very close to me as I have been through treatment for Anorexia Nervosa myself. Because of this, I believe that there is always something that can be learned surrounding this topic that could be beneficial to me, and I believe that I owe it to myself to learn as much as I possibly can about this subject so that I am able to help others.
