Questions: 1) Describe a research question in psychology that interests you. Do different Parenting Styles Influence a child’s behavior? 2) State a hypothesis for an experiment related to your research question. Describe a method to test your hypothesis. Discuss the independent and dependent variable(s). A child's likelihood of experiencing problems in school is higher when they grow up with a permissive parenting style. To test my hypothesis, I would survey participants who are parents to school age children. Questions would be both scenarios and self-assessment based on the different attributes for each parenting style. Same question style for survey two, however these questions would relate to the child’s behavior at school and home, as well as any struggles they may be experiencing at school (failing classes, difficulties with working with other kids, staying focused, etc.) The first survey would be used to identify each parent’s current style of parenting in their home. Using Diana Baumrind’s scale on the three parenting styles, authoritarian, authoritative and permissive. Using Diana Baumrind scales it gives a clear definition of each parenting style and the different attributes each style of parenting has. The next survey would be based on their child’s behavior at school. Questions would be surrounding the child behavior in different situations, such in group activities does your child play well with others, or does your child prefer to work alone. Another type of question would be based on the child’s academic history, is the child struggling to do homework or turn assignments. independent: the different parenting styles used dependent: the child’s behavior
