What arguments can you raise against the humanistic viewpoint, inlight of news reports of crime, violence and intolerance in today's society (e.g. Trump Protests, Alt-right ; gun violence; police shootings; anti-muslim bias, etc. )?   In your answer,   a) Identify a   specific news story , and discuss the role of operant conditioning and the role of   reinforcement   ( Module 3: Lesson 1) in developing specific negative/criminal behaviors.   b) Next, discuss the seeming contradiction of humanistic psychology’s emphasis on our inborn potential for favorable growth given this negative/criminal behavior. To understand this discussion, we must first understand the meaning of a humanistic viewpoint, operate conditioning, and reinforcement. Humanistic viewpoint is to have empathy and stress good behavior. Operate conditioning is employing rewards and punishment for behavior. Reinforcement means when you increase a behavior. An argument that can be raised against the humanistic viewpoint is police brutality. During the year of 2020, we all witnessed the death of George Floyd by officer Derek Chauvin. While witnessing this tragedy, we saw how much it impacted not only the nation but worldwide. Many people of color felt that it was time for justice to be brought upon not only George Floyd but, for those who died in the custody of a police officer. Operate conditioning is identified in this situation by many minorities rioting and protesting peacefully; however, reinforcement was implied when Derek Chauvin was charged with murder. The contradiction of human psychology can give potential growth to negative criminal behavior because when it comes to an individual’s socioeconomic background some will view criminal behavior either good or bad, for example, when an individual is stealing food to feed their kids we see that as a valuable reason; however, someone who is higher in class will view this as a crime.
