Week 4: Discussion . In this week’s discussion, provide an example of an experience you had that caused you to make a generalization about an entire category. Was the generalization justifiable? Why or why not? One experience I can remember having that caused me to generalize about that entire category was being spider bitten as a small child. This experience was so traumatizing for me at such a young age that it instilled fear in my inner psyche. Such a fear that caused me to generalize that I was supposed to fear all spiders. Even though it was not all spider types that bit me, I still associated the two the same. According to Psych News Daily, (Mastering the Art of Generalization, 2023) Generalization is a fundamental concept in psychology that plays a crucial role in how you learn and adapt to your environment. It refers to the ability to apply what you’ve learned from one situation to other, similar situations. For instance, if you’ve learned that a stove can be hot and can burn your hand, you don’t need to touch every stove to understand that they all have the potential to harm you. In my own opinion, I believe this experience was justifiable because it taught me to stay away from all spiders and that even though they all may not be poisonous they can all still bite you. So, it prevented me from further experiences like this one by teaching me they were bad and I did not want that to happen again in the future.
