In his social experiment about aggression, Albert Bandura placed a preschool child in a room to work on an art project, in another room, there was an adult with some other toys, a mallet and an inflatable doll he named Bobo. After a while, the adults get up and starts attacking the inflatable doll with the mallet for about 10 minutes straight, yelling and hitting it, all in the presence of the child. After this, the child is moved to another room with nicer toys but is told that she is not allowed to play with those toys. The experiment was repeated with other children and those who didn’t experience the aggressive outburst of the adult, were less likely to express the violent behavior than those who experienced it (Myers & Twenge, 2019, p. 73). The outcome of this experiment, proves that people indeed are influenced by one another. In my opinion, there is darkness in all of us, but when we are in a social environment in which we are nurtured and cared for, that darkness is not easily accessed and perhaps we are not aware such darkness even exists. I grew up in a very violent household in a more violent town, and to me, violence was a normal part of life. It wasn’t until I left that environment and found Jesus, that I realized how to live differently. As an adult, I cannot even tolerate watching a violent scene on TV and it is fascinating to see how that was my baseline at one point in my life. In a Biblical perspective, we see darkness enter humanity right after God tells the firsts humans what His expectations were. Once that darkness we know as sin, enter the world, God’s mission has been to reconciliate our relationship with Him. 1 Peter 2:9 provides some hope for humanity when it says “But you are a   chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of the One who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light” ( New International Bible , 1978/2011).
