Amber Worlton 2/5/2021 Crime and Delinquency Research Paper Proposal Topic Mental illness factors and Juvenile Delinquency: Correlation between those who have mental illnesses and delinquency o Are kids who have mental illnesses more likely to be delinquents Do certain mental illnesses always cause delinquency Thesis While some say juvenile delinquents chose to commit a crime, there is a correlation between mental illnesses and adolescent delinquents. Those who suffer with certain mental illnesses are more likely to act out because certain illnesses affect the decision-making part of the brain. Helping adolescents manage their mental illnesses would lower delinquency. Major Points There is a direct correlation between mental illnesses and juvenile delinquency. o I will use statistics from studies that show the connection between these two things. o I will talk about how common mental illness is to adolescents and how it’s often overlooked due to them being young. Certain mental illnesses affect the decision-making part of the brain o I will talk about what the main mental illnesses are in adolescent delinquents. o I will go into detail about the mental illnesses and what they are, what part of the brain they affect and what symptoms are present because of them. o I will bring up the argument that people say that these delinquents know what they’re doing and that they can chose to not act on their thoughts. Helping adolescents manage their mental illnesses would lower delinquency o Therapy being made readily available will allow those who struggle with mental illness to get help. o There should be more resources available in schools as well as prisons o There should also be more resources available to those who are living in poverty
o I also want to talk about current resources there are for adolescents and how it can be expanded. Reliable Sources Book: Hammond, S. (2007).  Mental health needs of juvenile offenders .
