PSY 215 Module Two [Blank line] Shaquon T. L. Forbes Southern New Hampshire University PSY-215-J2586: Abnormal Psychology Charlene C. Jerome November 5, 2023
Module Two Social media is used by billions of people throughout the world. The relationship between social media use and psychological functioning, especially anxiety and depression, has demonstrated varied results. Some studies have found that social media use has a positive impact on well-being by facilitating online social connections or enhancing physical (offline) interactions (Ancis, R., J., 2021). One psychological benefit of frequent social media use could be bonding with others. Or the feeling of being a part of something. The article by the Pew Research Center describes benefits like having more trust in people and feeling more supported (Hampton K., Rainie, L., Lu, W., Shin, I., Purcell, K., 2015). These feelings in my opinion relieves stress. In the article, “ Social Media and the Cost of Caring”, researchers suggest the relationship between social media use and stress is indirect (Hampton K., Rainie, L., Lu, W., Shin, I., Purcell, K., 2015). However, the psychological cost of frequent social media use could be depression or anxiety. In the article, “Social Media Use, Psychological Function, and Well-Being”, Julie Ancis Ph.D., suggests that a meta-analysis of the mental effects of social media use found a weak to moderate association between the smartphone and stress, anxiety, and depression ( Ancis, J., Ph.D. 2021). This is why I believe the psychological cost of frequent social media use could cause depression or anxiety. Research findings tell us that our awareness of other people’s stressful life events on social media can increase our stress levels. Social media makes us more connected to our family and friends. I believe that witnessing the stressful events of our family and friends can increase stress in our own lives. It is the social uses of social media and the way it increases awareness of distressing events in other’s

lives, that explains how the use of social media can result in users feeling more stress indirectly (Hampton K., Rainie, L., Lu, W., Shin, I., Purcell, K., 2015). What you see on social media can indirectly stress you out. The researchers tell us that stress is contagious, for example, a person comes home from a nice day. Then they go on their social media page to find out if a friend or family member has passed away. That person would most likely become very stressed out because of the tragic news they have just discovered on social media. The article, Cost of Caring” that high-stress levels are associated with awareness of other people’s stressful events, and it may be a negative consequence of social media use because social media may make users more aware of the struggles of those in their network (Hampton K., Rainie, L., Lu, W., Shin, I., Purcell, K., 2015). Social media is used by billions of people all over the world. It can promote levels of education and awareness that help to enhance well-being in many ways. There are Online learning institutes and platforms like YouTube that promote education. For example, I am currently attending SNHU online because about six months ago I saw a promotion for SNHU on Facebook. I then went to the SNHU website and looked at some of the courses and decided that it was time for me to go back to school. I know this may seem a bit corny, but in a sense, Facebook has helped me to improve my education and in turn, helped me to enhance my well- being with that one promotion. There are many social and political groups on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram that promote awareness to help enhance well-being. Social media can and does promote support groups to help many people to enhance their well-being. Content sharing is another way that social media promotes awareness and education to help enhance well-being. This is why I believe that social media can promote education and awareness that help to enhance well-being in many ways.
If I was a social media influencer I would enhance compassion and empathy for all people who struggle with psychological disorders by simply bringing awareness about mental disabilities. I would encourage others to talk about mental health. Honestly sharing about ourselves online   can enhance   our feelings of well-being and online social support, at least in the short term (   Chandra, R., 2018). I would share true positive feelings. For example, One time I posted a positive post about checking in on my friends, and one of them DM’d me to tell me that they were going to commit suicide until they read my post. I now really check on that person. That is the reason why if I was a social media influencer I would try to be more inspirational when posting. I believe that compassion and empathy can make a major difference in someone’s life when posting on social media.
