Social/Emotional Intelligence Table D024 Brigitte Phillips SEI Power Skills Skill Set Scenario Self-awareness Mindfulness, patience Practicing mindfulness is being aware of your actions and how you are portraying yourself. You need to be aware of your tone of voice, facial expressions and what your body language is “saying”. Demonstrating patience is not easy for everyone. I feel that I am a patient person, but my mother and husband do not have that characteristic. If I am at the doctor’s office with one of them and it is taking a while, they become agitated and demonstrate impatient behaviors. I will sit there patiently and try to distract them by making small talk. Self-management Self-motivation, time management Being self-motivated is a skill that is very important in health care. Often you have to recognized what needs to be done and do it. You cannot wait for someone to come around and tell you. Time- management is a skill that I need to improve on. Here it is, a few days before my term ends, and I am cramming to finish my assignments. Both of my parents have cancer and keep me pretty busy, but I have not managed my free time very well. I procrastinate terribly and always have. Hopefully, I will learn how to manage my time better in the future. Interpersonal communication Verbal communication, non- verbal communication Non-verbal communication is just as important as verbal communication. It is important to ensure that a person’s non-verbal cues match what they are saying. For example, I had a patient that rated his pain at a 4, but the grimace on his face indicated that his pain level was much higher than a 4. Upon further investigation and conversation, he admitted it was much higher. He just didn’t want any pain medication. I informed
him that medication administration was entirely up to him and it was his right to refuse it. We just needed an accurate pain level to document. Executive Function Problem solving, critical thinking The ability to problem solve and to think critically are very important life skills. Often in healthcare, we are faced with problems that require “out of the box” solutions. I live and work in a rural setting and sometimes we don’t have access to equipment, especially in home health, and you have to get creative. A clothes hanger on a curtain rod makes a great IV pole, in a pinch. Social awareness Empathy, kindness Demonstrating empathy and kindness makes a world of difference to people you are interacting with. Small acts of kindness, such as holding the door for someone, giving a sincere compliment, saying good morning to strangers, paying for someone’s coffee, or just listening to someone vent about there problems, can impact a person’s day.
